The real center of community life in High Rolls is the Gas Station/Store, complete with pizza parlor. It is the place to buy your weekly "Powerball" and other lotto tickets (hence the casino theme), where community notices are placed on the windows (lost cat, hay for sale, etc.), and where you are most likely to run into neighbors. Bernie Lechman, Postmaster, might argue this last point. The post office is a pretty good place to see folks too, but because of postal regulations, community notices are limited on the post office walls.

Not much going on in High Rolls in the evenings. The two restaurants are open, and the General Store closes around 8pm. Most folks like staying at home and looking at the sky. One year, we had a fantastic display of the Northern Lights. They were so bright they woke me up in the middle of the night!

US Highway 82 can be very, very dangerous, especially when travelled by those white plated cars from our flatland neighbors to the east and south of New Mexico (Texans). Be very, very careful driving on this highway. Passing is always dangerous, unannounced rockslides can be tricky, and precipitation creates havoc. The road is regularly patrolled by the New Mexico State Police, and they give no quarter when issuing tickets. Heavy truck and recreational vehicle traffic adds to the risks of pedestrian traffic at roadside stands, gawking motorists, and old, slow vehicles.
