Since 1941, Dickey's from Texas has expanded to many states, including Las Cruces, New Mexico where I dined (twice) and the food, friendly staff and great/easily-accessible locations along interstate freeways.
Open for lunch and dinner, you can smell the BBQ as soon as you arrive in the parking lot and when you enter the rustic but comfortable and interesting interior, you REALLY get the urge to enjoy the BBQ flavors emanating from the kitchen area.
Favorite Dish: I LOVED the smoked BBQ pulled pork sandwich with all the fixings.
Real BBQ flavor, lots of extras including big dill pickles, beans, coleslaw and even a free ice cream cone!
Originally a pizza-themed restaurant, this place has expanded its menu to include a HUGE variety. Whatever I have in mind, I'm always sure to find something not only suitable, but exceptional. Also, big kudos for some of the coldest (and cheapest!) beer in town - Sam Adams even makes a special ale just for them. (did i mention i like beer? lol)
Besides their pizzas, don't miss the "pizza skins" or the 'rattlesnake pasta' - tastes like chicken is what my server said. (in fact, IS chicken, which made her pun that much cuter!)
Love this place, and will continue to frequent when I can.
Favorite Dish: I adore the rattlesnake pasta here - it is penne pasta (multigrain option) tossed in a spicy jalapeno-laced alfredo sauce. Topped off with grilled chicken (which is somehow WAY more moist and tender than the chicken breasts I grill at home...). There's cheddar cheese over the top and it's served with a breadstick (they tell me they are made there, and they do taste way to fresh for that to be a lie). Anyhow, I'm pretty picky about the texture of my pasta, but this is just perfect. Try it, you'll love it.
The food is spicey so be careful! The resturant is in the 1840's Historic Old Butterfield Stage Building. The lobby has parots and piranhas for you to look at while you wait for a table.
Favorite Dish: I always oder a margarita and a combination plate. They also have a wonderful soup; Caldillo. I hear the desserts are wonderful but I'm always too full to order one.
As you may guess from the name, Cattlemen's is not for vegetarians. They offer a variety of steaks, chicken, seafood and some Mexican dishes. The decor is decidedly western with saddles, western paintings, a cutout of John Wayne and even a room with wagons in the back. The place also has a small sports bar/lounge attached. Maybe a tiny bit more expensive than average.
Favorite Dish: I had the Teriyaki Chicken which was recommended by the waitress. It was very good.
Hooters is famous for their wings and their cute women in bright orange short shorts and Hooters T-shirts. I love their wings, their clam chowder and their chili. Gotta love the staff too. Friendly!
Favorite Dish: This Hooters did not offer the clam chowder or the chili. I opted for the beer battered fish which was a bit overcooked.
I like Chinese Food and I like all-you-can-eat buffets (although I tend to overeat at them). This one was very nice. The seating area was huge and the selection was large too.
Favorite Dish: They had lots of seafood dishes; but no Chicken in Blackbean Sauce
Dick's Cafe is where you'll find municipal employee's trucks out front for breakfast and lunch. Low key kinda place with fantastic breakfast food, mexican food, american food and no frills.
Favorite Dish: The breakfast burrito smothered with green chili. The green chili is hot here. And yummy. Their green chili cheese/hamburgers are legendary here. The mexican food is typical for the area and absolutely worth ordering. Service is efficient and not overly friendly. they are usually very busy and seem to need more waitstaff--no complaints though.
International Delights or (ID) as locals say it, has a patio, small middle eastern shop, sodas, turkish coffee, salads, and lots of mid east dishes including daily specials like salmon, steak, soups and curry chicken. They open at 7:00 a.m. and close at Midnight. Fantastic hours for a Las Cruces eatery. The food is fresh. Vegetarian dishes like the Mezza plate or the Veggie sandwich are popular. When we want to meet someone to go over a poem or do an interview or eat after a reading we always go to ID. The Patio is beatiful and has a fountain. The view overlooks parking lot, but people watching is good.
It gets hot hot hot on the patio in summer as it faces south. Their breakfast is lacking with things like Kefta but they do offer sweets like cheescakes and Baklava. You stand in line to order and they give you a number. It can be absolutely packed during lunch and dinner. The service is Always slow not matter when you go. The portions are ample but they are chintzy with things like their feta cheese, yoghurt dip and olives.
Favorite Dish: I really like the Gyro Sandwich with Falafel stuffed inside when I am super hungry. It is very tasty and satisfying and pour on the cucumber yoghurt dip. The fries are great. I usually order the mezza plate though. It has a sampling of tabouli, hummus, olives, dolmas and delicious pita bread. It is overpriced but hits the spot. The flavored cold sodas are excellent.
I ate the La Posta specialida., which had 1 of almost everything. The service was great. They kept filling the water and brought out tons of chips. The food was excellent. The inside of the restaurant has different themed rooms. We sat in the lava room which had a Caribbean theme and a day of the dead statue of the wall. I would recommend this restaurant based on the price, service and great food. The best food, however, hands down was at Carnitas Queretaro.
We relaxed in the Bean coffee shop where I had some green chili soup. I was surprise that coffee shops in New Mexico do not have chili
flavored coffee. There are seasonal places in NYC where you can get chili coffee and hot chocolate.
Carnitas Quertaro had some excellent food and great service. They had some great hand made Guacamole. I ate the Emoladads which you can not find in other
restaurants. These are great tasting enchiladas with sweet mole sauce on them. You have to try this dish if you come here:)
