The building on this spot is not historic but it is built on the site where it is believed a store owned by Roy Bean and his brother Samuel G. Bean had a store in the 1860s. Roy Bean would later become the famous (or infamous) Judge Roy Bean.

Buckhorn Saloon

One of the most famous buildings in the historic town of Pinos Altos (Tall Pines) is probably the Buckhorn Saloon. During its heyday it was reputed to get pretty wild. Normally it houses a restaurant that serves dinner only starting at 6PM. It also has an open mike night on Mondays and live music Wednesday through Saturdays.

It is closed on Sundays. Reservations are a must. It is closed right now, though, for renovation!

Also in the town is the Pinos Altos Museum. The museum houses a collection of antique items from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The museum is housed in a log cabin from the 1860s and at one time the building served as the 1st schoolhouse in Grant County. it has been owned by the same family since it was built. It has a large giftshop and only costs $1 to go in the museum. Hours are 10 AM to 5 PM daily.

Norton Store

The Pinos Altos Ice Cream Parlor, Cafe, Gift Shop and Post Office is housed in the Norton Store which was built in the early 1860s. It houses a small restaurant, the post office, a general store, and a gift shop all crammed into a small space. There is a counter with stools and a few small tables. The walls and the rest of the space is crammed full of various items. Antiques, photos, downhome humor, etc. The owners seemed pretty friendly and the clientele was a mixture of locals and tourists. The sign saying "If it's called Tourist Season, why can't we shoot them" is a joke (I think).

Favorite Dish: I had the Cornbread Pie which is a layer of cornbread covered with chili, cheese, onions and (optional) jalapeno peppers. It was pretty good and reasonably priced.
