    Town Main Street

Favorite thing: Red River was first called River City. When ores were found, hundreds of gold, silver and copper mines were carved into the mountain with names like Golden Treasure, Silver King and Black Copper. There were two general merchantiles, a livery stable, two newspapers, a sawmill, blacksmith shop, barber shop, more than a dozen saloons, several hotels and boarding houses, a dance hall and a hospital. There was also red light district with plenty of gambling and barroom brawls.

When the mines played out, homesteaders outnumbered prospectors. Town gained new momentum by renting abandoned mining cabins to flatland visitors seeking refuge from the heat. Now, there are year-round activities, from skiing and snowmobiling to fishing, hiking, four-wheeling, and horseback riding.

Red River lift line...not much time spent here!

Favorite thing: Anyone who goes skiing appreciates the shortest possible lift lines. And, while lift lines aren't really much of a problem in Red River, you're always going to get in more skiing if you spend less time in line.

So, go out earlier and get in some quality runs before the others finish brunch, especially on the weekends. There will be more pristine powder and the slopes will be more freshly groomed, too.

Fondest memory: Like I say, when you ski, you want to SKI, not stand in line. So, my fondest memories of Red River involve skiing......lots of skiing.
