    The Pink Adobe

After hearing so much about The Pink Adobe from our friends, it became a #1 choice for dining upon arriving in Santa Fe.

The Pink Adobe is a favorite of locals and world travelers alike. It was voted 'Most Favorite Restaurant in 2004' and sits across the street from what is said to be the oldest church in the U.S., San Miguel Mission.

Rosalea Murphy opened the restaurant in 1944 and it came to be a meeting place for celebrities and those involved in local politics. A portion of the restaurant was constructed in the 1600's--the warm, rosey color of the adobe brick inspired its name.

I found the small stuccoed dining rooms and warm fireplaces so inviting! My husband and I ordered the Tournedos Bordelaise--a tender filet of beef on a puff pastry served with Bordelaise sauce and a browned potato. Although my husband's beef filet was a bit chewy, mine was delectable!

The Dragon Room Bar was added in 1977 and Cafe Pink in 2003. Rosaleas family continues to own and manage the establishment. The Pink Adobe Cookbook has been compiled to represent Rosalea's most popular recipes.

    A wonderful dining experience--try anything

Tomasitas is my favourite Santa Fe restaurant. This local restaurant is housed in the 1904 red-brick station house of the Denver & Rio Grande Rairlroad in the old railyard. It is usually packed with both tourists and Santa Feans. The margaritas are strong and the prices are low for large, tasty meals. They do not accept reservations.

My favourite dish is the combination sopapillas ($7.50) with red and green (Christmas) chile on the side as so it doesn't get soggy.

It's not often or EVER I see bread baked in the shapes of alligators, turtles or frogs, but at the French Pastry Shop it happens every day (picture #2)!

Delicious pastry, desserts, crepes and sandwiches can be sampled at the French Pastry Shop. It's a cozy little restaurant/bakery, accessible off E.San Francisco Street or from the lobby of the historic La Fonda Inn.

We tasted an especially creamy Montmartre (picture#3)for dessert one evening--luscious! and a raspberry crepe early one morning--disappointingly dry. The service was fine, the wait staff friendly and the atmosphere warm and inviting. Hours are until 5pm.

    Happy Birthday, Janis
    by VeronicaG
Aqua Santa was a bit difficult to find as we navigated the streets at night, but it was worth it.

This intimately sized gourmet restaurant looks like nothing special from the outside, but once inside it has subtle charm. A blazing fireplace added atmosphere to the room, which contained perhaps 10-12 tables, with the kitchen area taking up quite a bit of the space.

Quail with Risotto looked like something a gourmand would order, so I somewhat hesitantly selected that, while my husband ordered Linguine with Pheasant. Both meals were very good, even though we definitely stepped out of our comfort zone to try them.

Our fellow traveler, Janis, celebrated her birthday at Aqua Santa. They were kind enough to include a candle on a very rich looking chocolate cake to mark the event. She said it was delicious!

    Hours are 12N-2pm and 5:30pm-9pm Wed.-Fri. and 5:30pm-9pm Tues. & Sat.

La Casa Sena: My ex-favorite restaurant in Santa Fe

This large and popular Santa Fe restaurant used to be my favorite restaurant years ago when La Casa Sena served traditional New Mexican cuisine. Their menu has changed significantly and now I would characterize their food as continental with a Southwestern flair.

The ambiance is wonderful here. The restaurant is located in the original adobe house built in 1867 by a Civil War hero, Major Jose Sena. You have your choice of eating in the large, beautiful courtyard, or in one of several dining rooms inside.

I had a delicious combination vegetarian dish that had had a roasted corn and quinoa tamale, pear-walnut-manchego quesadilla, asadero enchilada, tropical red chile. My husband ordered trout baked in adobe (pictured here) served with corn and wild mushroom tamale, divorciado cream sauces. The server cracked open the adobe tableside, which we found quite fascinating. It sure seemed like a lot of work just to cook a fish. Someday, when I have nothing better to do and have a hankering for making mudpies, maybe I'll attempt fish baked in adobe at home.

My son ordered grilled wild king salmon with smoked cheddar polenta, sauteed asparagus, black bean mole. My daughter had the roasted honey-brined chicken breast with garlic and peppercorn wild rice, sauteed spinach, Moroccan Harissa sauce.

The food is very, very good, but to tell you the truth, I missed the standard New Mexican cuisine the restaurant served 16 years ago..

Saddle your horse and head on down to the Cowgirl! Non-pretentious, simple, hearty food in a fun atmosphere is what you'll get. Try the buffalo burger and a margarita. They have a lovely patio for outdoor dining and a bar which sometimes hosts live bands.

Spending time at Cafe Oasis is like walking into 'Alice in Wonderland.' Each room has built-in lofts and little niches to curl up in. You will definetly feel like Alice after she ate the cake and grew very large if you are sitting up in some of the lofts! The place is an organic restaurant ran by some interesting hippies. Don't expect prompt service, or even clean silverware, but do expect to be able to spend hours hanging out and meeting some interesting folk. At night look for the neon Virgen de Guadalupe on the roof.

For creative and delicious Southwestern cuisine with a hip crowd, go to Coyote Cafe in downtown Santa Fe. It is probably the top restaurant in Santa Fe. The chef, Mark Miller, has taken traditional Southwestern dishes and added creative touches.

You'll dine in a large room with an open kitchen. The decor is contemporary Southwestern/California. This is a good restaurant for both an intimate dinner and a gathering with friends and family.

We had stuffed pasilla chile relleno, pecan grilled New York sirloin and corn tamales with blackened jalapeno tomatillo sauce. It was here that I found the perfect margarita. Coyote Cafe calls it "La Ultima". This was also the place where I tried a margarita with mezcal, the stuff that contains the worm. That mezcal stuff tasted different. Maybe it was because of the worm. I liked wormless La Ultima better.

We had dessert, too - a trio of chocolate dessert - chocolate sorbet, chocolate flan and chocolate torte. Outstanding!

The Bumble Bee is a great place to go for a casual, quick, and excellent meal. You can order ahead for pick-up at their window or order at the counter inside and sit at one of the brightly coloured tables. While waiting for your meal, indulge in the fresh salsa bar. Try them all to find your favorite--mine is roasted red tomato salsa.

I always get the Bumble Bee Burrito with steak. It is packed with roasted bell peppers and onions, cheese, fresh salsa, and guacamole. It is huge and I know I've been especially hungry if I can actually finish the burrito!

  • The Downtown Subscription is so cool because you can get almost any magazine or paper you can think of there (even foreign press)! And on top of that, they serve pretty good coffee too! Sometimes it is hard to get a table or even a stool because it is so packed, but there might be room outside on a patio chair.

They serve coffee, tea, pastries, and the usual coffeehouse fare.
