Coyote Cafe features fresh native ingredients in its contemporary Southwestern cuisine. For dinner, appetizers (wild boar tamale, sashimi tuna tartar, etc.) are priced from $9-$16 and entrees (tea-smoked salmon, black truffle risotto, chile-glazed beef short ribs), etc.) are $26-$36. There is a dining room, as well as a more casual bar area. by lareina Coming from the Northwest, I love to sample new brews. I was delighted to find the Blue Corn Cafe and after trying their sampler, I have decided that my favorite brew is the 'end of the trail brown ale.' Not to mention, they also have good New Mexican food! The grilled corn and chipotle soup was excellent and I also had yummy blue corn tacos. They have a nice upstairs location right downtown. by lareina This place is nearly hidden off of Cerillos Rd, but you might find it if you follow the aroma of fresh-baked breads. They serve coffees and teas as well as an amazing variety of baked goods. Unfortunately, the seating area is rather small, so be prepared to take it to-go. Ore House Decor :) by kymbanm We were wandering the Plaza restaurant menus as we circled our way back to the car and decided this was the place to try. We walked up the stairs of saltillo tile and followed the music ....... the hostess sat us in a booth a little away from the musicians, so we were able to talk :) The menu goes on for pages - and there are huge selections of tequilas and margaritias - but since we don't drink alcohol, we just stuck with the FOOD!!!
We started with a roasted/stuffed plblano chile ... filled with cheeses and seafood ..... okay, that was a great choice :) My companion chose the steak stuffed with blue cheese, and I chose the avocado and pistachio encrusted halibut ..... we were both in heaven. It was so good we weren't talking much at this point! The veggies were some of the best asparagus I'd ever had, and it came on a bed of yummy wild rice. Neither of us had anything left over on our plates! The Shed is hidden away in a courtyard off of Palace Avenue. The adobe hacienda is filled with sunlight and hanging plants. Serving both lunch and dinner, they apparently do NOT take reservations for lunch. I arrived around noon (right before the rush) and bellied up to the bar rather than wait for a table. My blue corn chicken enchiladas ($9.00) were served up with pinto beans and posole. The portion was filling and tasty. This dish was prefaced with garlic bread rather than the traditional (for Santa Fe) tortillas.
Aside from the blue corn chicken enchiladas, I overheard many patrons ordering carne adovado. The red chile is supposedly divine here, but I had the green with my dish. The Shed is apparently famous for both its lemon souffle and its mocha cake, but I never made it to either, as my enchiladas were more than filling! by lareina El Meson is a good Spanish restaurant near the Plaza. I had a filling meal of various tapas accompanied by a few glasses of Rioja. It made me miss Spain, especially because it is cheaper to eat there, but I guess all American Spanish restaurants have overpriced tapas because they are so in right now. So dig into a plate of paella and dream of the Old World! Leave a Comment

Our waitress Julie by rexvaughan This is a restaurant with an attached cantina but I think the menus are the same. We ate in the cantina where the waiters and waitresses also sing. Every few minutes one of them would walk to the grand piano where their accompanist was awaiting and sing. The program was mostly songs from Broadway shows and they were quite good. We were with old freinds from Angel Fire and surprisingly met a couple of freinds from our home town in Georgia so they joined us for dinner. They have just been married about 3 years and she regaled us with the story of why she kept her maiden name instead of adopting his which is Funk. Let your imagination go with that one! Between her and the singers it was a most entertaining evening.
This place has what is purported to be the most extensive wine list in the Southwest US, and we all had different wines. I had prime rib which was delicious. Others had chicken, trout or salmon and all declared it very good. I can also attest to the quality of their creme brule and expresso. Highly recommended even if it is a bit on the pricey side. Tomasita's may be the best New Mexican food restaurant in the world but Gabriel's (about 5 miles north of the Opera House) is a contender (see the next tip). Tomasita's is located next to the old railroad depot. There are no reservations; just leave your name when you arrive. It is a large restaurant and the wait is usually not too long. Good in-town backups are La Choza and The Shed (lunch only). Also, you may want to try Cafe Pasqual's for breakfast and the Pink Adobe for dinner. The picture is looking east from the railroad tracks. The entrance to Tomasita's is in the right background (the building with the red tile roof). Guadalupe Street runs north-south on the east side of Tomasita's. It was hard to get a good pic since it was Friday evening and the parking lot was packed. In trying to find a good internet reference for Tomasita's, I was surprised to hear the varied reviews. Here are the TripAdvisor reviews. I discount the ones that say they know "Mexican" food (it is really quite different from New Mexican food) and spell chile as "chili," since they are judging from a different context. However, even the locals give mixed reviews. My own experience is that the food is excellent and worth the almost inevitable wait (keeps my satisfaction from being a great experience).
It's all good but the green chile chicken enchiladas (right front in last pic) are my favorite with the chile rellenos a close second. The chicken quesadillas (left front) are listed as an appetizer but are plenty big enough to be a full meal; they are a good alternative if you are worried about the chile being too spicy. Actually by local standards, the chile at Tomasita's is pretty mild (even though the sign in the entryway says otherwise). by lareina The Santacafe Restaurant is tucked away inside the historic Padre Gallegos House near the Plaza. We sat in a beautiful room which had a large deer skull mounted on the wall above a mantle. In front of the skull was a lush bouquet of flowers, a little homage to Georgia O'Keeffe I suppose. The food was ornately presented and each dish had a contemporary flair. Nice place for a romantic dinner. In warmer weather, they serve in their beautiful courtyard as well.
For an appetizer, the Shiitake & Cactus Spring Rolls are excellent. The Goat Cheese Stuffed Chicken Breast was very rich. This funky little place near the Santa Fe plaza has Mexican food, BBQ and steaks. We tried the BBQ chicken sausage which came with lots of extras including BBQ beans. Also good was the quesadillas. The waitstaff was friendly and adorned in the latest 'cowgirl' fashions. Leave a Comment
