The Blue Corn Cafe is a trendy upscale restaurant/brewery set right in the Historic Old Town of Santa Fe. There are multiple rooms with a southwest motif. The bar has lots of wood including some beautiful flooring and a nice long tiled bar. It's icy cold inside, popular in a town with some hot days on their horizon. There is a second location outside the city center but this is likely the one you would most conveniently visit.
Favorite Dish: They have a fairly large group of lunch specials but we both opted for the Carne Adovada, tender pork chunks marinated in red chillies and slow cooked. It was served with rice, pinto beans, and tortillas for $9.50. The portions were good sized. We had asked if the meal was hot spicy and the bartender said it wouldn't be considered hot in New Mexico. Well, it was pretty hot but very tasty. While you needed a few beers to wash it down, it made for a tough time at discerning tastings of the beers offered.
We had the End of the Trail Brown, a fairly light interpretation of a brown with bland palate though not overly sweet. The seasonal ESB was an amber brew with a thin head and malty palate and fairly dry finish. The High Altitude Pale Ale was a lightly filtered golden beer with a nice head, reminiscent of Sierra Nevada, dry and hoppy throughout. The Sleeping Dog Stout was black with a creamy tan head and chocolate malt palate and nose. Some roast bitterness in the clean dry finish. Best of show for us. We finished up with the Road Runner IPA, a light golden medium bodied beer with a soft mouth feel to offset some of the intense bitterness. Definitely for hopheads. They have three different size servings and we chose to share the middle size one on most of these, making it possible to try all interesting beers on tap. Mid-sized beers (10 oz.) were a bit pricey at $3.75 but this is downtown Santa Fe. Lunch with beers and tip came to $41 for the two of us.

Maria's is one of those local institutions that have been around forever (1952) and doesn't worry about what's trendy; they just keep doing what it is they do best. In this case, it's New Mexican food that's good, inexpensive (most under $10) and served in massive quantities. New Mexican is really just Mexican so you won't see anything much that you won't recognize but be ready with your preference for red or green chile sauce - or both. The menu runs to burritos, enchiladas, tamales, tacos, steaks, soups, salads and other entrees commonly found at south-of-the-border type restaurants.
What's not normal is the kajillion types of tequilas they stock at the bar - all authentic agave-based brands from Mexico - and a list of 100 margaritas they'll create from any of those bottles. They are very good and positively lethal so indulge with caution.
There are several indoor dining rooms (some with kiva fireplaces), a bar and a patio. Just as the menu hasn't changed much over 50 years, the decor is a little faded and worn but cheerful and comfortably casual. Parking is limited and the place is always busy so you might end up leaving your wheels some distance down the street.
Bonus: Meals come with heavenly, warm, light-as-air sopapillas and honey for dessert. YUM!!!
Favorite Dish: Tamales and Carne Adovado (a specialty) were both very good, and I hear that their green chili stew and blue corn chicken enchiladas are terrific too.

This is a local's restaurant, with fast-food style service and providing excellent food. Carne Adovada and vegetable tacos seem to be favorites. Beef here is shredded, not ground. Good stuff, highly recommended. Don't go for the atmosphere.

When you get tired of the green chile and the heavy NM food and need a good "city fix" with good service drive on out to Tesuque (5 minutes outside Santa Fe) and have a drink and appetizers or a fabulous dinner at the new Auberge Resort, Encantado. Great food, amazing sunset view, excellent service and a fabulous resort overall. Chic Santa Fe style.
Favorite Dish: It is all good but the bass with the huitacolche sauce and mini tamales was amazing as well as the fresh herb ravioli appetizers. In the bar the ceviche appetizer is outstanding and more sushi than ceviche. Great cosmos.

Great food, wonderful service in a small intimate restaurant. Perfect for dinner after a visit to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum next door.
Favorite Dish: The tasting menu offers a wonderful variety and matching of food and wines with a five course meal.

Inside a mall of antiques and furniture dealers, Cleopatra's has tables out in the mall. The cook and the food are authentic and delicious. Prices are good.
Favorite Dish: Cous-cous or dolmas or spanakopita. The George plate is good, but so is the King Tut. I've never had anything I didn't like there.

The food was excellent, beautifully prepared and perfect. The service was terrible. No one was checking to refill water glasses, or available if you wanted to request a knife or a napkin.
The surroundings look beautiful but they are cold. No music and we were there just pre- Christmas Eve. They first wanted to set us at a table in the middle of a space that did not feel comfortable. Then, when we said we wanted something else, they set us by the COLD windows. No fire was kept in the big beehive fireplace on this cold night. Not cheery.
Favorite Dish: All the dishes we had at our table were good. Duck, lamb, vegetarian, soups and salad.
