    Many-coloured Silver

by toonsarah Written Oct 20, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Silver City has a pleasingly raffish air, with many of its old buildings not only smartened up but also brightly painted. Unlike many western towns, its buildings were built in stone or in cast iron, and have stood the test of time. Also unlike some carefully “restored” old towns, it seems unafraid to mix old and new. In recent years it has become common to use these cheerful paints, perhaps influenced by the many artists and hippies who have settled here. Shops on the main street, Bullard, are an idiosyncratic mix of appealing galleries and small-town “not really changed since the 1950s” shops. Residents too seem to be a mix of ageing hippies, relaxed artists working in all genres, university students and lecturers, and assorted drop-outs. We liked Silver a lot, and apparently other people do too, as it is regularly cited as one of the best places to live in the country!

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Visit the Historic Downtown area for fine Art Galleries, arts and crafts shops, and to take a step back in time with the appearance of the old west town look.

Fondest memory: Best memory is of Graduation from Silver High School, home of the Fighting Colts.

Fondest memory: The beautiful trout in the Gila River. (No fishing allowed in Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, though.)
