The Official New Mexico State Question...
...is "Red or Green?" This refers to whether you would like red or green chile sauce on your food. You may wish to ask your server which one is hotter that day and order accordingly depending on your tastes and tolerance. My personal favorite is green, as I find that green chiles have a 'butter-y' flavor I really enjoy. Not sure which to choose? Answer "Christmas" and you'll get half red and half green (but only in the northern part of the state; folks in the southern half will look at you like you're crazy).

Although it is unfortuate,...
Although it is unfortuate, there is the occasional prejudice in our area. Hispanics and Anglos make up most of the population and anger does flare up now and then as it does anywhere. Otherwise Silver City is rich in cultural diversity and shoul be experianced. The Spanish languange is not required knowledge as English is still the primary language here in New Mexico.
People in Silver City are very friendly and will often say hello to anybody they may pass on the street. This sometimes startles visitors, especially those from the East Coast of the US (where many people on the street keep their head down and avoid eye contact with strangers).
Another local custom is for drivers on lightly-traveled roads to wave to those traveling in the opposite direction. Waving back is the friendly thing to do, even if you only lift one finger off the steering wheel.
