 | Albany General Tips | Tips 1 - 10 of 20 | | Popular General Tips | Other General Tips Tips | All Tips (20) As I drove into and back out of the city centre on Western Avenue, I noticed a number of fine old mansions and homes. These are a couple of the smaller houses located not too far from the Holiday Inn Express where I was staying. It shows a construction styles that are common throughout New England and New York. In my short drive into the city, I passed by at least three educational facilities whose architecture and grounds appealed to me. I tried to get a photo of the State University of New York (Albany Campus) that conveyed the feeling, but I did not really succeed. I needed more time to wander around looking for better angles, instead of just pulling over into a parking space at the side of the Avenue! Leave a Comment

Albany, just like every city has it's fair share of street vendors. The vendors here only come out during lunch hours and they line the street next to the SUNY campus and The Empire Plaza. What I thought was neat about these vendors is that each stand is dedicated to a different style of food, there was Chinese, Indian, Italian, Sushi, etc. I wasn't very hungry so I settled for a key lime Italian Icee from the Columbo stand. It was the best Italian Icee I've ever had.

Albany is filled with stately buildings throughout its boundaries, some of which sit peacefully side by side with modest residential communities. In the 19th century when building was at its height, various styles made their mark on the city "skyline," but after the rebuilding and urban improvement of the 20th century, notable standouts tend to grace every city block. Students and lovers of architecture will have plenty to pique their interests and sate their appetites in Albany. Leave a Comment

Albany's Cultural Education Center opposes the state capitol building on the Empire State Plaza, but at such a distance that the two can scarcely be viewed from the same perspective. Today's Center is a smaller, modern building set off from the row of much-taller agency buildings, in appearance looking like several stories pancaking a helpless ground floor of classical arches. Behind its misbalanced layers you'll find a library, an archives and a museum. Leave a Comment

The urban renewal in Albany begins almost on the front steps of the state capitol building. Girded on its right hand by classical state department buildings and running a few hundred yards from the front steps, the civic Meeting Center ("the Egg"), the uniform Agency towers (23-story skyrises) and the Cultural Education Center are but few of the structures on the immaculately-planned and constructed Empire State Plaza. Most visitors will probably regard the medieval features in the city center as the most picturesque and, but there are significant examples of classical architecture in Albany, and rightly so, when the state capitol building (a common bastion of classical lines) is made to resemble a medieval town hall. Long pillars and Corinthian capitals are much used in Western architecture and with good reason. Albany incorporates them into its state as well as civic buildings, a wonderful counterbalance to the medieval and futuristic icons surrounding. Leave a Comment

A quest for Pavement. It was an on going quest to find Pavement in the local bars. Glad to say we found it a couple of times. Leave a Comment

Something about a car. I really can't go into things with this one. But lets say if you own a Ford Probe you should have custom locks installed. The keys to your car with open others and vice versa. Leave a Comment
