The area around Salmon River and Lake Ontario is beautiful. Wintertime brings a ton of lake effect snow, but people are out fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling in full force. Bring warm clothes, and be prepared to head on out to enjoy the crisp, clean winter air.

The monument is located on a small hill behind the Salmon Heaven Lodge. It reads:

IN HONOR OF
THE BRAVE MEN
OF THE TOWN
OF ALBION, WHO
VICTORIOUSLY
DEFENDED
THE UNION ON
LAND AND SEA
DURING
THE WAR OF
THE GREAT
REBELLION

Salmon Heaven Lodge, Altmar

Ewingjr98 Says:  Harry & Brenda Powers run the Salmon Heaven Lodge. This fishing camp has 6 rooms that can house a total of about 30 people (some rooms have 6 beds!). Cost per guest is about $29 per day including a light continental breakfast. If you stay at the lodge, you can eat breakfast...

Salmon River Inn is the only restaurant we tried in Altmar. For three days, we had breakfast and lunch here, as well as a few beers in the afternoon. Enjoy a hearty breakfast of pancakes, French toast or omelets along with OJ, coffee, potatoes, and tangerines.

For dinner, I tried salmon, pork loins, and some excellent prime rib. They have lunch specials every day of the week ranging in price from $5 for taco night to $25 for a huge 24 ounce prime rib.

Dress for success

My father, Andy, and Ray

Along the eastern shores of Lake Ontario lies one of the major snow belts of the US. Right in the middle of this winter wonderland is Altmar. Seasonal snowfall on the nearby Tug Hill Plateau averages around 200 inches per year.

The moral: Dress for success. Wear warm clothes, gloves, boots, and a hat. You will need all of this plus a few layers underneath.

Beware of the Rotweilers!

Some of the neighbors in Altmar have Rotweilers that occasionally break their chain. One night while walking to the Salmon River Inn, a Rotweiler got loose and bit our friend Old Jim right in the old ass. That sure must have hurt!
