The idea for the Tom Wahl's Restaurant chain was born in Avon, NY.
It started with ice cream and home-made rootbeer and now is a multimillion dollar business with a full lunch and dinner menu of good American foods.

The specialty of the house is the Wahlburger which is steak and cheese and ham and a special sauce. I prefer the plain steak sandwich with ketchup, mustard and a pickle. If you'd prefer you can get roast beef or chicken or tuna or a hotdog. Whatever you choose you can be sure that it is the best quality meats.
Dinner menu is the lunch menu plus salads and french fries.
The home-made root beer is still unique and good.

You can get a plateful for under $10 and leave with a full stomach and a full wallet.

This is a nice, clean, locally owned and operated diner. Booths and tables, paper napkins, friendly waitresses who smile when you place your order; the service was fairly quick (one waitress and 4 or 5 tables of customers when we were there) and the food was served hot and quickly.
Turkey Club sandwich for me and Tuna Melt for the wife. Coffees and apple pie for dessert.
Nice quiet meal (they even have the local paper on the counter for you to read while you eat) in an easily accessible diner. And the price was under $20 for our lunches.

So if you are on your way somewhere and passing down routes 5 and 20, then stop in and have a bite.

Avon Transportation

You can call LATS (Livingston Area Transportation Service) and order a dial-a-bus to take you where you need to go in the county areas serviced by LATS
    (www.rgrta.com/RegionalOperations/LATS.aspx).
That is the only form of public transportation.

All other transportation is personal (your own car) or commercial (cab, limo, rent-a-car).
The closest cabs are in Henrietta: Brighton-Henrietta Taxi (585-747-6161) and AA Airport Cab (585-425-3228). Both are a good 10 miles north of Avon. For car rental, again you need to get it from Henrietta: Enterprise (585-359-3500) or Hertz (585-334-0500). Limos can be ordered from Tiffany on Scottsville Road (585-328-9880) or Diamonds on West Henrietta Road (585-533-9050).

The best transportation is your own car. Route 5, route 15, route 15A, route 20A, route 39 and I-390 will take you just about anywhere you need to get to in the area. Most of the tourist attractions are within 25 miles of Avon and there are plenty of gas stations at the intersectins of the major highways.

Avon Shopping

I am not much into shopping but the Avon Flea Market is more of an adventure walk than shopping. My brother used to have a booth here and got us to visit.

It is a potpourri of stuff. Some of it is antiques, Some of it is refurbished roadside refuse, Some of it is local arts-and-crafts, Some of it is overage from the local businesses, all of it is available at the right price. Haggling is expected; deep discounts are normal.... if you pay the tagged price then you paid too much.

So if you have a couple of hours and $10 in your pocket and are near Avon, stop in and enjoy.

Avon Warnings and Dangers

  • davecallahan's Profile Photo

by davecallahan Updated Apr 20, 2007

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Avon is so safe that I could not find any bad information about the town.
One rape, one murder and one robbery in the last 5 years. About the only prevelant crime is Larceny (theft) and that is way below the state average.
There are only four sex offenders registered in Avon, NY.
(to see more information about this, use the website below)

Use common sense and the same precautions you would use at home and you will enjoy your visit to the area.

When I was a kid I could always remember going through Avon on route 15 and seeing the White Horse statue on the corner of US5/20. That's how we knew we were halfway to Conesus.
I haven't looked for that White Horse lately but I'll bet it is still there.

Been to a drive-in movie lately? Maybe it is something you'd like to try while you are on vacation in the Avon area (technically East Avon). Take a look at the website below for shows that are playing this summer. We have friends that hit this place several times in the season.
Nice clean restrooms; popcorn stand, serves fast foods for the intermissions. Bring the kids and they can sleep in the back seat while you enjoy the second late movie.

There is always more than one set of movies playing at a time because they have screens at each end of the parking area.

    to get there:
1520 route 15, just north of the intersection of route 15 with routes 5 and 20; next to the flea market.

The name of this course says it.... there are some very nice panoramic views on the hilly course. The short course (5100 yards) only needs 4 clubs: driver from the tee, 7 or 8 iron from the fairway, wedge for chipping and putter for the green. That length makes it a pleasant course for a beginner. The long course 6400 yards is a challenge for a medium strength player.
There are plenty of water hazards but they are on the periphery of the fairway (duffers beware). The course has some highly sloped fairways with elevated greens.

The ProShop has equipment for sale or rent. They have a new clubhouse where you can grab something to drink or a bite to eat. (see website for the menu).

$25 gets you the course, the cart, and some great scenery and fresh air.

    ENJOY!
