Before leaving Binghamton after our friend's wedding shower there the day before, we decided to pay a visit to the local zoo. It's definitely one of those cagey type zoos, which I felt bad about, but we did see some unusual animals I'd never heard of before. We watched the binturong (bearcat) as I applied sunscreen to our squirming toddler. The aviary was a nice escape - it was cooler in there, and the animals were free-roaming, including a cute dik-dik. Our main reason, though, for visiting the zoo was that it had a (working) carousel. (We'd tried to ride another carousel the day before and it was closed for renovations, and the others didn't open until noon or later). Binghamton is known for its antique carousels, and bills itself as the "Carousel Capital of the World." Leave a Comment Address: 60 Morgan Rd.Website: www.rossparkzoo.com

Greater Binghamton has the only carousel collection of this kind in the world. Of the fewer than 170 antique carousels remaining in the United States and Canada, six are in Greater Binghamton, New York. Because of the uniqueness of these carousels and the incomparable circumstances of their survival and existence, all six are placed on the New York State Historic Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Between 1919 and 1934, George F. Johnson (of Endicott Johnson Shoes) donated six carousels to the local parks. He felt carousels contributed to a happy life and would help youngsters grow into strong and useful citizens. Because of his own poor childhood, ?George F.? believed carousels should be enjoyed by everyone and insisted that the municipalities never charge money for a magic ride. Even now, these carousels still run from Memorial Day to Labor Day between 10 am and 5 pm at no charge or for an admission of ?one piece of litter.? They are located at: Ross Park, Recreation Park, C Fred Johnson Park, GW Johnson Park, Highland Park, and West Endicott Park Leave a Comment Address: see aboveDirections: See website for mapWebsite: http://www.binghamtoncvb.com/carouselsmap.asp

If in the Binghamton area, try to go to one of the restaurants that serve Speidies. They are marinated meat served in a variety of ways....like in a sub roll. My personal favorite is chicken wiht light oil and mayo. A unique Southerntier food that you'll not find anywhere else. ENJOY! Leave a Comment

The museum has all sorts of great exhibits. They have some permanant and some that change seasonally. It costs about $5 to get in, but they offer student discounts, so bring ID if you have it! There is a planetarium in the museum. They have shows on Thursdays and Saturdays. The museum has shorter hours in the winter, and I think they're closed on Sundays and Mondays.
