Binghamton Things to Do

  • Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park

Before leaving Binghamton after our friend's wedding shower there the day before, we decided to pay a visit to the local zoo. It's definitely one of those cagey type zoos, which I felt bad about, but we did see some unusual animals I'd never heard of before. We watched the binturong (bearcat) as I applied sunscreen to our squirming toddler. The...

  • Historical Carousels

Greater Binghamton has the only carousel collection of this kind in the world. Of the fewer than 170 antique carousels remaining in the United States and Canada, six are in Greater Binghamton, New York. Because of the uniqueness of these carousels and the incomparable circumstances of their survival and existence, all six are placed on the New York...

  • Magic City Music Hall

An awesome place to hear great music. Bands like GWAR, Goatwhore, Journey, Yellowcard, Ryan Cabrera etc... have all played here. Check their website, to see if there is anything of your liking playing when you plan to visit. One of the great things about Binghamton, Great Music...

  • Speidies (Spelling?)

If in the Binghamton area, try to go to one of the restaurants that serve Speidies. They are marinated meat served in a variety of in a sub roll. My personal favorite is chicken wiht light oil and mayo. A unique Southerntier food that you'll not find anywhere else. ENJOY!

  • Ross Park Zoo

This is one of the oldest zoos in North America; it houses 120 animals on 25 acres. The zoo is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It costs $5 for adults, $3.50 for kids, $3/person of groups of 10 or more. There is also a carousel to ride.

Binghamton Restaurants

  • Delicious and homemade

This restaurant was great, it's owned by a Trinidadian woman who use to teach home economics. She makes everything fresh and is so friendly. When I visited there was homemade chicken gumbo soup, and she gave us a free cookie since it was our first time in her cafe. It's small but has an inviting feel. Unfortunately, it's only open from 11-5 Monday...

  • voted best barbecue in town

My friend and I decided to try 1 new place a week, and Theo's was first on our list. It boasted a big sign out front that said it was voted #1 BBQ in town in a Reader's Choice poll. It's in a tiny building that doesn't look like much. The tables aren't fancy, but they do the job! Besides, most people order their food for takeout. They are open...

  • needs a good cleaning

I am not a great fan of fast foods in general (although I do like the Wendy's salads) and this particular fast food place is probably well down on the list of places I would stop at again. We had been driving a while and were in need of some quick sustenance so we stopped here because it was the first place we spotted when we got off I-81.There were...

  • Sabaidee- Best Thai around

This place is great. I love thai food and therefore have visited most of the Thai places around Binghamton. None of them compare to this great place. It's roomy inside, the decor is nothing special, but they make up for that with wonderful service and delicious food Vegtable Soup, Pineapple Curry

  • Dinerlicous

I think this diner is supposedly polish, but I'm really not sure. Anyway, I really always get the same thing. A speedie sandwhich. If you have never had a speedie you are MISSING out. Also check out the deserts.... the look good when you come in the door and taste just as yummy. SPEEDIE SANDWHICH!!

  • Authentic Italian

I actually crave this pizza. My grandma lived in Binghamton and the only thing my sister and I ever looked forward to was the food. Mr. Cortese was a friend of the family so we seemed to eat here a lot! (Which is fine by me!!) Everything is wonderful, but the last time I was there someone ordered a white pizza with spinach and a white sauce. It was...

Binghamton Nightlife

  • Summertime First Fridays

On the first Friday of the month during summer months (definitely June, July, and August - I think May and September depend on the weather), they close down several blocks to traffic and have a huge party in the streets. They have live music and dancing, lots of food and craft booths, and the block of State Street where a lot of bars are is roped...

  • Speaking of Strip Clubs...

Madame Oar's and Tzer's are some of the best strip clubs in the world. Full nude in Tzer's and a great bar at Madame Oar's. All of the girls at Tzer's are clean and young (18-25) and the cover charge is only a couple bucks. Check it out if you are into that kind of thing.

  • Nighlife?

The only worthwhile club that was around was called IceHouse. This club looked dirty, but in all seriousness it was fairly safe, despite being on a really shady street. It got shut down recently because of underage drinking, or so I'm told. Basically, unless you want to get shot, stabbed, buy drugs, or go to a strip club... go to bed.

Binghamton Shopping

  • Greatest Mall Ever

The Oakdale mall is a tiny rat hole where 13 year olds congregate to harass people who walk by. You won't find much for stores in here, but it's not bad if you have to get something (clothes etc.) and get out.

  • Best unusual gift shop

This shop is soooo cute. It has cards, jewlery, pottery, coffee, chocolate, bath products and many handcrafted items. The smell of the coffee gets you in the door and you could look at things for hours while their cat sleeps in the front store window. local artist jewlery, excellent coffee! $3.00 to $300.00

Binghamton Local Customs

  • communities

Binghamton is very diverse. Some sections of the town are upscale, well-kept-up and other areas are downright dirty with litter and broken windows and cracked pavement. There are a vast range of neighborhoods to visit in Binghamton. The present areas designated as neighborhoods are:CENTER CITY.... railroad tracks south to North Shore DriveEAST...

  • Speedies and Lupos speedie sauce

I'm not sure if that's the correct spelling, but Speedies are everywhere in Binghamton. There is even a speedie festival. We like speedies so much that we get Lupo's speedie sauce delivered to us in Ohio. Other people who have had it at our house or at a cookout have also started ordering it online!

Binghamton Warnings and Dangers

  • some cautions necessary

Binghamton's crime risk is rated as less than average which means it is safer than an average town in New York. The most prevelant crime listed was larceny (theft).Having said that, there still are 199 registered sex offenders in Binghamton (see website below). Some extra caution should be used if you are traveling with children or are a woman...

  • Seriously...

Honestly, I am not superstitious or anything, but this curse may be true. All my drive and passion for leaving Binghamton has vanished. Binghamton is not a recommended tourist area. There is little to do in terms of touristy things, and also, the weather tends to be cloudy and damp. The people here are not your run of the mill New Yorkers. I call...

Binghamton is called "The valley of shadow of death." This place may have a good and cheap college and that about it. Also it has too many bad area to list, we'd be here all day. Many of the poor people from NYC come here for the easy D.S.S. Many of the people are low grade. BUT not all Binghamton has nothing to do unless your looking to get drunk...

Binghamton is known as the "Carousel Capital of the World". Tempting as this may sound, there are only a few carousels. Also, it's not like they are anything special. Carousels are carnival rides, therefore, nothing worth traveling for.

Binghamton Off The Beaten Path

  • Well, technically ON the path . . .

If you want a place to take a walk or a run, try out your roller blades, or ride your bike, try the Rail Trail in Vestal. It's a flat, paved pathway that runs for 3 miles. There are markings every 1/4 mile, so you know how far you've gone. (The bridge is about 1.5 miles in). It's right off the Vestal Pkwy (Route 434) near the route 26 interchange....

  • Finch Hollow Nature Center

If you are looking for a nice walk, a place to take the kids to learn about nature, or want a place to have a picnic, try Finch Hollow. There is a small Natural History center/museum with people who will answer questions. THere is also an easy walk of about 1 mile which takes you through a field, over a stream, around a pond, through a pine forest,...

  • My friends got together and...

My friends got together and took me out for a day of relaxation recently that was great! We started with a hike up South Mountain, past the old gate house(theres lots of history here)and had a picnic lunch with a view towards the top. After spending most of the day with nature,we made our way to our cars and met back at one of my friends homes,where...

Binghamton Sports & Outdoors

  • Binghamton Mets - AA

You can come here and see the Binghamton Mets play. They are AA and have had some players come through worth watching. Just something to do when I'm in this area of the state and want to watch a game. Not that I am a Met fan at all. But hey. Who cares at this level.

Binghamton Favorites

  • Quaint town for scenic Americana

Binghamton is well located to numerous, relaxing day trips in upstate New York and is big enough to offer food and entertainment at night. As a sweatbird (flip side of a snowbird) I love the region's celebration of summer, overabundance of scenic places to drive, and nostalgic representation of how America used to be. Ithaca, the Finger Lakes, and...

  • South Central NYS

Binghamton is one of those towns easily passed through on the way to somewhere else. But like anywhere, there are things to see and do here.If I am passing through in the evening or visiting family not far off I will try to see a baseball or hockey game.
