Walking down Arthur Avenue towards 185th street you will find the Arthur Ave. Retail Market. Its a european style market complete with home made and imported sausages, cheeses, fresh vegetables, imported olive oil and olives, ceramics, gourmet pastas and more. In a true NYC/Italian atmosphere, you are sure to be offered to try the different sausages, cheeses and olives before you buy and will probably end up buying more then you anticipated. Who could pass up the fresh mozarella in vinagrette just made today?? Or the olives from Bari?? Across the street is a great restaurant for brick oven pizza and calzones. They have one of the oldest brick ovens in the country. Get a slice of pizza to go or have a meal in the restaurant in the back.

Besides the Retail Market, along Arthur Ave. you can also find clams on the half shell that the owners are sure to convince you to try and a couple excellent bakeries and good restaurants. I always loved the smell of fresh bread coming through the windows as I walked up the stairs to my apartment. (try the garlic and roasted red pepper focaccia!) The place in the picture is between 186 and 187th but my favorite was the one on the other side of 187th across from Citibank, The Arthur Ave. Baking Company. They ship the bread to the other boroughs as well. VERY good bread and Italian pastries. There is also a meat shop along Arthur ave that usually has a couple lambs hanging in the window (just like in Italy!) Donīt miss Egidios Pastry Shop on 187th street. About 1 or 2 blocks east of Arthur Avenue. They have great cakes and pastries and you can sit down for a cappucino too. Also along 187th you can find an imported gift store, Catholic goods shop, a few restaurants and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church. And as I mentioned, The neighborhood is not totally focused on tourism so donīt be surprised to also walk by the McDonalds, dime stores, laundromat, florist, clothes stores etc. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and DrinkDirections: Near the cross roads of Arthur Ave and 187th Street. D train to Fordham Road or Metro North Train to Fordham Station.

Its lively, noisy, littered, and a bit crowded on weekends. Fordham Road gives you the experience of the energy of the Bronx, and here its obvious you have left Manhattan. If you want some bargain prices (and sometimes also cheaply made) but fashionable clothes head for the shops on Fordham Road in the area around the Fordham subway stop. I got a great purse here for 3 dollars and I used to buy a lot of clothes here too. And since fashions are not meant to last, why pay top dollar for clothes that are?
Cheap clothes, shoes, accessories. Furniture if you are so inclined. Ah, and there is a jewelry store where you can get gold caps for your teeth and gold neclaces with your name on them, both Bronx fashion statements. Usually there are vendors selling ices, churros, hot dogs etc and one person sells an illegal but very effective substance for killing cockroaches, which is quite popular with the locals given the state of some of the buildings in the area.
A LOT less than in Manhattan. Leave a Comment Theme: Discount StoreAddress: Fordham RoadDirections: Take the D train from Manhattan, direction Uptown, to the Fordham Road stop.

Pastosa Ravioli is the place to go when you want fresh pasta and Italian specialty foods. They have great fresh pasta, fresh cheeses, roasted peppers, canned acnchovies, olive oil, vinegars and imported dried pasta. They have an extensive pasta selection: from pastina, annellini, Ravioli, Cannelloni, Conchigliette, Elbow,Farfalle, Fettucini, Fusilli, Gnocchi, Manicotti, penne, Tortellini, Rotelle, Rotini, Rigatoni, Ziti, Vermicelli or Spaghetti. The qaulity is excellent. When preparing a special Italian meal, Pastosa is a great place to pick up the freshest imgredients.
I love the Round Cheese Ravioli. They are so big and full of creamy ricoota cheese. They are always a hit with my family. The Gnocchi is my second favorite. It's so fresh, you just pop them in boiling water and your done in five minutes.
Inexpensive. $10-15 for a box of ravioli. Theme: Food and DrinkAddress: 3812 East Treamont AvenuePhone: 718-822-2800Website: http://pastosa.com
