THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN
  • Tip Rating:
  • What an absolutely beautiful place this is. The New York Botanical garden was established in 1891 and consists of 250 acres for someone to explore. You can walk it as I did or use the tram and take one of the tours. It is Open Tuesday through Sunday 10-6 in the warmer months and 10-5 during the later fall through early spring. The garden is divided into many different sections including a rock garden, native plant garden, rose garden, perennial garden and plant collections (narcissus, native forest, ornamental conifers etc.). Also available to explore are two gallaries, a library, and a conservatory.

I came on a warm and beautiful Sunday afternoon and spent my day enjoying the fragrant blooms. It was prime time for roses, so I got an extra special treat. When the wind blew in the right direction you could smell the rose garden from the other side of the gardens.

While I was here, I took some time to enjoy a snack at the cafe. I had some herbal tea and a salad of grape tomatoes, greek olives, artichoke hearts and mozzerella cheese marinated in balsamic vinegrette. It was soooo delicious.

Look for the many flower pictures that I took in my travelogues.

This can be pricey if more than one or two people are going. A combination ticket runs $13.00 for an adult. Parking is $7.00. Check the site for other pricing information.

    BRONX ZOO
  • Tip Rating:
  • My very first trip here was when I was eleven years old. My Aunt Dody brought me, my brother and my sister here while my mom was out of town for work. Even then this wonderful zoo amazed me. The modern Bronx Zoo is even more fantastic. They have added dozens of exhibits over the years and they continue to add them every year. This year they have added the African Dogs exhibit.

The summer hours for the zoo are 10:00-5:00 weekdays, and 10:00-5:30 weekends and holidays. Admission is $15 adults and $11 children (2-12) and $13.00 for seniors Thursday-Tuesday. The zoo is by donation on Wednesday. I do not recommend going to the zoo on Wednesdays due to the large crowds. The extra exhibits inside the zoo are at an additional fee, these are the Skysafar, Bug Carousel, Shuttle, Camel Rides, Butterfly Garden, Gorilla Congo, and the Monorail. The fees for these extras vary so please see the website for specifics. You can buy a POP pass which includes all the extras, see the website for details. If you plan to visit the Bronx Zoo several times or if you plan to visit any of the other zoos in the NYC area or even the NY Aquarium, you may want to consider purchasing a membership.

One of our favorite areas to visit in the zoo is the aviary. Patrick loves the birds, especially the really large ones. When we went this past spring we were able to see the absolutely adorable gorilla babies, as well as many other animal babies. I love the butterfly garden myself, although I have to admit its incredibly hot inside of it, but beautiful.

  • Probably the most well known place for sweets in the area, a great place to stop for a Cappucino and some pastries. Or buy an Italian birthday cake or special occasion cake for someone special... yourself? :)
Acording to the New York TImes, Egidios has been at this site for 90 years. "It is loved for its inky espresso, its crisp-shelled cannoli and its comfortable conviviality." For the full article and history of Egidio's, go to the NY times website (Published Oct 19th, 2004) or...

    BRONX ZOO-HOLIDAY LIGHTS/WINTER
  • Tip Rating:
  • A couple of weekends ago, I went to the Bronx Zoo with my son Patrick and one of his friends from school and her dad (also Patrick) and little brother Benjamin. We had such a great time. One of the nice things about going to the Bronx Zoo in the later fall is that the crowds really aren't crowds. We had little or no difficulty checking out all our favorite exhibits. One of our favorites was the Poloar Bears. They seemed to be right at home in the crisp fall air.

The best thing about going this time of year is the chance to see the Holiday Lights at the zoo. As the sun sets on the animals and visitors, light displays all over the zoo begin to light up. Of course they had the usual drummer boys and gift boxes, but they also had light display of the animals living at the zoo.

We also visited the Children's Zoo after dark and were treated to an absolutely fantastic story teller. The children were mesmerized by the story about the hedge hog that didn't want to sleep and the mice by the edge. Most of all they loved the song "The Twelve Days of Diving". Patrick was still singing the song today while he took his bath.

Entrance fees to the Bronx Zoo have gone higher in the last year, but for me it's worth it. I buy a yearly membership since Patrick and I travel down to the zoo several times a year.
    Entrance fees are:

$15.00 for an adult, $13.00 for seniors and $11.00 for children.

If you are already at the zoo you do not need to pay a separate fee to view the Holiday Lights, otherwise the fee to see the Holiday Lights is the same as a regular zoo entrance fee.

  • The Bronx Zoo touts itself as the best zoo in the world. And not without reason. It is an important zoo to visit for its diversity, the viewing possibilities and its dedication to wildlife. Contrary to what another person has said here on VT I think it IS a good place to visit. I think that many people are not aware that the Bronx Zoo founded and is the home to the Wildlife Conservation Society: The zoo aims to educate people about the natural world and to inspire them to care about its future. How can they be inspired to care for animals like these that still live in the wild if they dont even know they exist or haven't had the chance to see them in person? Many Bronx and New York kids visit the zoo on school trips and it can be a great educational experience for them to learn about animals and what kind of habitat they need to survive. People can't or won't care about the environment and the animals living in nature unless they come in contact with the animals and nature itself.
One exibit I thought was very nice and natural is a new one, The tiger exibit, its great. And the more money and support the Zoo gets, the more improvements they can make in other exibits as well. So check it out!
The zoo is close to the NY Botanical Gardens and Little Italy in the Bronx (187th and Arthur Ave.)

Check out the zoo´s website for more information!

    Bronx Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Bronx Zoo is a wonderful way to spend the day in the Bronx. I was amazed at how poorly parts of it are set up and then how wonderful other parts are. Its not my favorite zoo. But it is worth seeing.

    the Grand Concourse
  • Tip Rating:
  • (this pic is from another site) Grand Concourse, officially called "Grand Concourse and Boulevard", is a 4 1/2-mile, 11 lane major street that was modeled after Champs Elysees in France and is the borough's longest stretching street. Beneath it runs the former Independent Subway Line a.k.a. the D & B trains that run from 205th St. (Norwood) and Bedford Park Blvd. (Bedford Park), respectively, to Coney island, Brooklyn. The Bx1 and Bx2 buses also run on Grand Concourse.

A little known fact is that the GC rivals only South Beach, Florida for the largest number of art deco buildings in the United States. Though the street has been long neglected like much of the Bronx, you can still see how elaborate each building is. Most are your typical 6-story apartment buildings but some are as tall as 9 stories or more. This used to be the Park Ave. of the Bronx. Once a largely upper middle-class strip, moving to the Grand Concoourse was viewed as moving up in the world and pretigious.

Things to see on the Concourse:

    Edgar Allan Poe's Cottage
    Kingsbridge Rd.

    Bronx Museum of the Arts
    165th St.

    Loew's Paradise Theatre

    Bronx Zoo
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Bronx Zoo, a Wildlife Conservation Society, is one of the oldest and largest urban zoos in the world. Determined to save and conserve "wild life and wild places" the Zoo has been instrumental in saving many species including their succes in saving the American Bison.

A trip to the Bronx Zoo will take you away from the urban madness and transplant you to a wild and wonderful place. The zoo is host to thousands of animals and with an extensive program in educating and research.

The Bronx Zoo is one of my favorite Zoos and is well worth a trip. You'll get a glimpse at some very interesting and amazing animals that you'd only see in far away places. Children and adults alike always enjoy a day at the zoo.

One of the wonderful things about the zoo is that it is open 365 days a year, so you can visit any time of the year. There are also special events through out the year like the Holiday Lights and the current Madascar!

    Hours of operation Spring/Summer:

    Monday–Friday
    10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    Weekends & Holidays
    10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

    Prices of Admission:

    Limited entrance Adult $15.00; Child (Ages 3–12) $11.00; Senior (65+) $13.00

    POP (admission to 7 special attractions) - Adult $27.00; Child (Agest 3-12) $21.00; Senior (65+) $23.00

Children 2 years and under are always free!

On Wednesdays the admission is a suggested donation of a minimum $15 but it is also the time where all the schools plan the field trips and when most people visit.

    New York Botanical Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • I've been to the this Botantical Garden more times than I can remember. It is huge and a wonderful place to spend a day with your family or loved one. Accordingy to the Tram Guide, the gardens were modeled after Kew Gardens in London.

The gardens are quite expensive to visit and if you want to visit all the different gardens and ride on the Tram, you must purchase an all pass ticket for $20 per adult.

It had been many years since I last visted the gardens. A Moore Sculpture exhibit gave me an excuse and reason to visit this year so I invited my daughter and her family to come along and spend our usual day together at the gardens.

The Moore Sculptures are found through out the many different gardens and are quite interesting to see with all the beautiful natural surroundings.

    New York Botanical Gartden
  • Tip Rating:
  • Come here to visit of the last stand of forest within NYC city limits, and the largest virgin forest in a city, 40 acres! There are many varieties of local and exotic plants and always special exibits. A great way to "get away" from the city and imagine what it was like before NYC became the wonderfully crazy place it is today.
For all the information you need, visit the botanical garden´s webpage for prices, directions, exibits, etc.
