City Hall is a majestic Art Deco building standing at the geographic and political center of Buffalo. New York. Designed by architects Dietel, Wade, and Jones and built in 1932, City Hall is one of the country's best examples of set-back Art Deco architecture. It is located on Niagara Square. The obelisk monument in front is in honor of President William Mckinley who was assassinated in Buffalo at the 1901 Pan-American Exposition. The building has special significance for me as my grandfather, an Italian immigrant laborer, helped build this wonderful structure carrying bricks up the scaffolding to the masons. Leave a Comment

Erie Basin Marina by tpal From May through September, the place to be in Buffalo is the waterfront. Buffalo is located at the eastern end of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Niagara River. The area offers extensive access to the water and is one of the most active public spots. Erie Basin Marina, pictured here, offers sunbathers shoreline views, numerous boat slips, and a variety of waterfront condos. In the distance you can see the Art Deco Buffalo City Hall. Walk along the promenade and enjoy the extensive floral displays and experimental gardens. The area offers daily harbor cruises as well as tours of several permanently moored Naval ships. On a hot summer day it's the coolest place to be! Leave a Comment

Administration Building by tpal The Buffalo Psychiatric Center was designed by America's premier 19th Century architect H. H. Richardson. Completed in 1895, the building is constructed of Medina sandstone, a favorite building material of this era throughout Buffalo. The twin towers are clad in copper and stand 185 feet high. The building is no longer in use, however, the State of New York has recently committed $80,000,000 for its restoration and adaptive reuse. Leave a Comment

The Darwin D. Martin House by tpal The Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, the Darwin D. Martin House, has been a part of my life since my youth. I remember ringing the bell for Trick or Treat Night on Halloween and thinking "I should get some good stuff from this place". In fact, at that time, nearly fifty years ago, this historic complex was already struggling to maintain its grandeur. Over the next several decades the property changed hands several times and its future seemed in doubt. Finally, in 1992, the Martin House Restoration Corporation was formed and a $27,000,000 restoration project began. Progress is slow but precise. While the complex is being worked on tours are still being conducted. See it now and then return to Buffalo again and see it when it is finished. It's worth it! Leave a Comment

Not Key West...Buffalo! by tpal We love Key West, Florida. While there, Carol and I and about 10,000 of our closest friends went to Mallory Square to see the famous sunset. Nice, but guess what . . . we think Buffalo wins hands down! We go sailboat racing twice a week during the summer (some folks do sail ... ice sail that is ... during the winter - not us!) and have seen breath taking sunsets, mostly when the camera is not around. Leave a Comment Directions: From shore the best view is probably from the observation tower at Erie Basin Marina.

The Guaranty Building by tpal Louis Sullivan is considered by many to be the father of the American skyscraper. With the Guaranty Building in Buffalo along with the Wainwright Building in St. Louis, Sullivan showed the world how to "go vertical". The building clad in distinctive, Sullivan designed terra cotta with its ornate patterns continuing all the way to the top (the fact that most of the designs were not visible from ground level seemed to be merely a minor detail to Sullivan). As spectacular as is the exterior, the interior details must not be missed. Note: Check my General Tips for a detail of the terra cotta tile facade. Leave a Comment

Start on Delaware Avenue from downtown going north. You'll pass Buffalo's breathtaking City Hall, an art deco masterpiece. Enjoy the sights of this quaint avenue through Delaware park. History buffs will be intrigued to learn more about the 1901 Pan American Exposition fairgrounds where William McKinley was assassinated (Buffalo's very first notorious claim to fame-more to follow). Feel free to get lost artound Delaware park. It's a nice area. Make your way up to Hertel and turn right. Drive up and down Hertel to experience the ever growing Italian District. Backtrack down Hertel to Elmwood and make a left. You'll pass the Historical Society and the Albright Knox Art Gallery. Turn right on forest. See that creepy looking building on your left? It's the old Psychiatric Center, and it's like something out of a Bram Stoker novel. Turn left on Richmond and get lost in the sidestreets packed with old Victorian mansions; a reminder of Buffalo's wealthy legacy. Make your way eventually up to Elmwood to see the trendy Elmwood strip. Take Elmwood back to downtown. Leave a Comment

While I'd say the best works they have here are from the abstract expressionists (Rothco, Pollack, deKooning), this museum has a diverse and amazing collection. There's van Gogh, Kahlo, Modigliani, Warhol, Monet, Lichtenstein, Dali, Matisse and so much more. The oldest piece in the museum is from 3,000 B.C., and the works carry you through the years. The collection is wonderful, and I would say this is definately a must for all art lovers. The museum is closed Mondays, but is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. You can get in to the permanent collection free on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Otherwise, the admission costs are $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors and 13 and under are free. In Letchworth St. Park there are three beautiful waterfalls, all set in different land area positions that make for great photos ( to be included at a later date)During most of the year there is an inn in the park that has a resteraunt near one of the falls where visitors can stay and/or eat. One great photo area is a train tressle bridge that passes almost directly over the tallest of the waterfalls in the park(as I recall).Within the confines of the park is also some Native Seneca (Indian)history exhibits, and recreation of a Seneca tribe style log cabin ( that's right, they didn't live in teepees or lean to's). If you are traveling anywhere near this area on your way from the east coast regions of NY,NJ,PA,etc. you won't be dissappointed if you stop for a 1/2day to several day visit. The Best part of the Park may be the beautiful canyons that have been etched into to hills here, some over 700 feet deep, twisting and turning with their maker, the Genesee river that flows at the bottom.Several of the canyon areas are very colorful, with several layers of strata quite visable.

My first time to American Falls, the Niagara Falls by Darlingace, 1 more photos The best and the first thing you wanna do when you arrive Buffalo is to vist the Niagara falls, the border between US and Canada (In fact, 1/3 of the falls lies on Ontario). Just not to be mistaken, the NIagara falls is a township. It was named as the Town of Niagara with a combination of 3 major falls- the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and the Canada site's Horseshoe Falls. For those who hold a valid passport to enter US and Canada without visa, it will be advisable for you to enter both countries to have a complete view for the falls. Besides that, remember to be loaded with cash as both countries has a casino located nearby the falls. For those people who wanted to have a more lively trip, will advise you to enter Canada and stay there for a night. The town of Niagara, Canada has various things to offer to you. There are Casino, Skylon Tower, HardRock Cafe, and a fantastic main street which located with bars, restaurant and parks. Once you get accross the Rainbow Bridge, you will reach the casino and the main street. Then, you will see a major difference between the Niagara in US and Canada. The town in Canada is much lively and interesting. The skylon Tower will provide you a complete view of the falls. After that you might wanna try your luck in the casino. No matter if you skip it or not, the next place you definitely wanna go is to hang out the main street. Get to the rain forest cafe for lunch or dinner then you can have a relaxing night in the bars. Of course there is some monument, bird observatory and national reserve park, but i dont really encourage you to do outdoors over here.
