If you fly into Buffalo and you want to go downtown from the airport, do not ever take Genesee Street. It is pure getto nastiness. Be very cautious driving in the snow if you're not used to it. Buffalo is a flat city with thankfully straight roads but don't be fooled. Buffalonians know how to drive in the snow after years of practice, and still you have to have a healthy respect for mother nature. Driving in lake effect snow can be scary. And don't get lost in Niagara Falls at night. For being the location of one of the most beautiful sights in the world, the actual city is pretty dangerous. Leave a Comment

by nuker Watch out for the snow and winds if you travel in the winter. Western NY is famous (or infamous) for the Lake effect snows that sweep across the region. Buffalo this past year got hit by a wild blizzard that stranded motorists all over the city, forcing people to sleep in their cars and stay over in stores around the city. Some people got stuck in liquer stores! Leave a Comment

boarded-up house in the east side by nizroc Unless you know where you are going or have business there, stay out of Buffalo's East Side. It is potentially dangerous. Leave a Comment Phone: 911

I have family members who have moved away from Buffalo in recent years. Crime is a factor in that decision. The problem is that so many areas which are normally decent bump right up against bad ones. Use judgment at night. Downtown has a few trouble spots as well. Even the Anchor Bar is in a sort of "grey area," when it comes to crime. Lock your car and remove or hide any valuables when parking. Our teams have never won. We know this. Keep your mouth shut about it. Buffalonians can honestly get very upset about their sports. And, whatever you do, don't mention the name Scott Norwood. Leave a Comment

There are rough areas of Buffalo like any major city. The south side and east side of Buffalo isn't really good to be in. But take note that Buffalo is a blue-collar city, and the houseing refelcts that. While homes aren't large or even extremely nice like in other wealthier cities, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is a rough area. Leave a Comment

by tjhorner1 SNOW! Let me just tell you this story. Last time I went home was Christmas 2001. I was there for 1 week, but I couldn't go anywhere because we got 7 1/2 feet of snow in 4 days. It cleared up just in time for me to go back to North Carolina! Leave a Comment
