Take a cruise from the Port of Rochester up the Genesee River from Lake Ontario or around Irondequoit Bay.

This river paddleboat looks like one of the old Mississippi river steamers. But it has padded seats, air-conditioning (heater in the Fall of the year) and a snack bar.
There are two decks for viewing: one enclosed in case of inclement weather; the other is outside with a safety rail. The cruises start at noon, 3pm and 6pm and run about $10 for two hours. The noon and 6pm cruises have an optional dinner plan for an additional $10-$15.

Some cruises have themes like Mark Twain or Genesee History or Who-Dun-it.

Call the phone number below for exact dates and reservations. Individuals or large groups are welcome.

    Dentzel Carousel

by davecallahan Updated Feb 17, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Within the confines of the Ontario Beach Park is the 100+years-old Dentzel Carousel.
My grandparents took my parents who took me who took my kids who took my grandkids to ride on this animal extravaganza. The carousel has seen some renovations over the years and the colors are still bright and gaudy and the music is loud and brassy. They used to have a gadget with steel and brass rings you could try to hook with your fingers as you rode around and around and around. I am not sure whether that is still in place (probably some safety law against it now). But the structure and the menagerie of up-and-down and fixed animals still is a pleasure to watch.

    Charlotte Beach (Ontario State Park)

beach on a good day in a good year

Tourists call it Ontario Beach Park or Ontario State Park, but to us it is just plain old Charlotte beach. Since before my grandfather's time (late 19th century), the sandy area north of the Charlotte Lighthouse was "the beach". The land has been filled-in several times as the Lake Ontario water levels have changed and eroded the beach. There was a wooden Boardwalk running the width of the beach in the 1930' and 40's. A bath house was constructed which now also serves as a party room you can rent for special occasions.
The water at the beach in recent years has been off limits many times with warnings posted by the Rochester Health Department. And when the water is clean enough to swim in, there just aren't that many hot days in Rochester. So beach-sitting is a big pastime but not swimming.

But we keep up the myth (to draw in tourists) that we actually have a beach here.
