Cooperstown Things to Do

  • Ommegang Brewerty

Ommegang Brewery is a great side trip from Cooperstown - takes about 10 minutes to get there from the center of town. It's on a 140 acre former hop farm and they make traditional belgian style beers. The tour lasts about 15 minutes - the building isn't all that big. There aren't set times. Just show up and they'll give you a tour. They explain the...

  • Farmer's Museum

This place is like an old colonial area locked in time. If you walk through this place, they have a blacksmith in his shed and other people in character around this small village doing their thing in full uniform. There is real farm animals roaming around as well. They love when you ask questions. Ask about anything and they'll educate you to great...

  • The Baseball Hall of Fame is great

If you are a baseball fan, this place will knock your socks off. You will go through exhibits of really old memorabilia of the greats of baseball. See the locker of Babe Ruth or Stan Musial. Check out the exhibit about Jackie Robinson and minorities in baseball. Look at all those World Series rings and trophies. You'll see things ranging from the...

  • Special events at the Hall of Fame

There are a lot of special events and programs at the Hall so you should consult their calendar when planning. It is available on their website. We just happened to be there the day of the All-Star Baseball Game between the National and American League. They were showing the game on a big screen in the 200-seat theater so we went. They provided...

  • Grand home of baseball lore

Anyone who is a fan of American baseball will certainly enjoy this place. It sits in the town where purportedly baseball was invented, although there are some questions about the actual origin. In addition to a grand hall called the Plaque Gallery where there are bronze plaques commemorating the 292 members which includes not only major league...

  • Good food option near the Hall of Fame

This place was pretty busy with a lot of this rustic town's hustle and bustle eating and watching football. It's mostly a burgers/sandwich/wraps joint but got some cajun influence too. I had the grilled chicken but my buddy had the burger. Pretty standard tasting place. Wouldn't say it's amazing in terms of food but it's a good stopover for lunch....

  • Classic American diner

If you find yourself driving from Albany to Cooperstown as we did, this is an ideal stop for a meal about 30 or so miles west of Albany. The front portion of the diner was a factory-made one and was placed in this location in 1937. It has evidently been in operation on this site ever since. It is one of a dying breed on the American road, but the...

  • Coffee, but much more

I like most strong and flavorful coffees, even the big chains, but like finding local coffee houses even better. Stagecoach is one of those, having, I think, only locations in Cooperstown and Albany. The coffee is excellent and from their website I learned that they roast their own in small batches. I will be tempted to go back here for breakfast...

  • Hidden away, but not to be missed

This is a delightful surprise hidden down a little alleyway off Main Street, but they have a sign on the sidewalk on Main to help you find it. The front entrance has a charming, retro, almost European appearance and the interior is equally charming with a warm bar area, mirrors lining the wall in a 2-story atrium and nicely colorful and homey...

  • Good food, great view

The LakeFront Motel Restaurant was a very pleasant surprise. In addition to having one side of windows affording nice views of the lake, the food was good. Cooperstown Transportation

  • You'll need a car here

Since this place is so rural and spread out, you'll likely need a car to get here. Once you're here you can take a horse carriage ride or walk, but I doubt you'll be able to get around solely with those two methods. So have a car ready, which I'm sure you will since there's no other way I can see to get into this town.

  • You almost have to drive to get here

Once you are in Cooperstown there is really no need of a car. We left ours parked at the motel our whole stay. Getting to Cooperstown is another matter. There is no train service into Cooperstown and, as near as I can tell, no bus service either, so you will likely need a car to get there from somewhere. If you are flying, you will likely have to...

  • Baseball Bats

This place is right near the Baseball Hall of Fame on Main Street. I'm sure that it's kind of catering to tourists, but it looks like it makes high quality bats that you can customize with engraving and exact dimensions. They tout that they make bats for professionals and collectors so the quality must be pretty good. Baseball Bats, hats, jerseys.

  • Monogrammed Baseball Bat

Custom monogrammed bats. I think it's an appropriate souvenir, for yourself or a gift for that baseball fan. It'll run you about $60 for the less expensive bats. All you have to do is sign your name on a paper, which is magically engraved onto the bat. How cool is that?

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

How awesome would it be to catch a game being played by local kids? It's the best deal going here, as it's FREE! I have to admit it was serendipitous, as we were just exploring the neighborhood and happened upon it.

Cooperstown Warnings and Dangers

  • Twisty roads and local police

On your way in and out of Cooperstown, the roads can be very treacherous because you may be going at the speed limit but all of a sudden a big curve in the road comes without notice. Also be careful of animals because I almost ran over a chicken crossing the road! Finally, although I didn't experience this, people I know said that they got pulled...

Cooperstown What to Pack

  • It can get cold

I came around september and in the mornings, it's quite cold. You might want to bring a jacket and long sleeve shirts as it was about 50 degrees in the morning and low 60's in the day in September. If you want to stay in a B&B I'm sure you might want to bring your own types of shaving cream and such. I stayed at a Best Western so I didn't need...

I haven't taken this tour in about 10 years, but I went several times as a kid and loved it every time.
