Yet another of the wine tasting stops on the winery trail around Keuka Lake. This one is a small family-owned and operated (the Barretts) vineyard. They have a few of their local wines for tasting (Chardonnay, Reisling, Cabernet, Merlot) and some wines from imported grapes (Chambourcin, Vidal, and Rougeon). The host/hostess for the tasting are family...more

Seneca Lake is known locally as being quite moody and it has the ability to almost appear angry at times. It sometimes has whitecaps and other times it can be clear as glass. During the winter months a strange phenomenon occurs known as lake fog. A fog bank 100 or so feet high towers over the lake in the mornings a sight not to be missed. You can...more

The Crooked Rooster Pub is located on Main St in Watkins Glen the food is excellent the beer is always flowing as are local wines they often have unique musical acts and sometimes other types of artists. In summer you can sit in the front near the street for an open air feel and people watch. Casualmore

The Windmill Farm and Craft has become an extremely popular destination. You can basically find anything you are looking for here. There are 4 main buildings and a whole bunch of outside shops. From produce to clothing to local food and crafts if its in this region you will find it at The Windmill.
What to buy: Mennonite quilts, local produce, crafts, area novelties
Open Saturdays from April til the 2nd Sat in Dec also open summer holidays
What to pay: You can spend as little as $1 or as much your checkbook allows
Be very cautious when traveling the roads in the area as we share our towns with a large Mennonite population who travel primarily by bicycle and horse and buggies they often travel in large groups and are sometimes less then cautious.Watch for them and be alert!!!
Dundee area has a rating of "below average" for crime risks which means it is pretty safe compared to other towns in New York State.
There are 4 sex offenders in the Starkey-Dundee area but that includes about 4000 people which makes it a thousand to one for running into one of the SOs.
There are no major prevelant crimes in Dundee, just the typical petty theft and assault misdemeanors (fights). There appears to be little risk to tourists.
We always lock car doors and keep money in a money belt and valuables locked in a compartment in the car trunk. We have never had any problems in our visits to this area.
Its a very small clean quiet town until tourist season hits then fuggadabotit!!There are streets lined with shops many quaint but most overpriced. Watkins Glen State Park is here which is a beautiful gorge trail park complete with campground and olympic sized pool but along with those things comes the busloads of tourists. Watkins is also home to one of NASCARS premiere road racing courses Watkins Glen International. The track holds racing events all summer long but come NASCAR weekend you cant get near the place. There is also a super WalMart in Watkins which is open 24 hours. Many of the small shops have great local arts and crafts and Watkins is a very nice town but the population basically triples in summer.
Unique Suggestions: See Watkins Glen State Park it a a very pretty place the walking includes lots and lots of steps and the trails can be slippery in spots due to the waterfalls and mist. Wear appropriate shoes.
Have dinner at Seneca Harbor Station a water front restaurant located next to Captain Bills Cruises. The food is excellent, they have a nice bar area, you can eat out on the deck and after dinner go for a stroll on the lighted small Seneca Lake Pier.
Fun Alternatives: Avoid Watkins during NASCAR weekend if at all possible.
Many people are not aware of the Finger Lakes Trail. The FLT is 562 miles long and connects the Allegheny Mountains in PA/SW NY with the Catskills. The FLT is a premiere trail in the NE surrounded by beautiful countryside.
Dundee is quiet and peaceful. The air and water are clean, it remains a place where you can walk down the street without fear where everyone knows everyone and no one is afraid to reach out to lend a hand when one is needed.
