The sunken Forest is actually a pretty lush forest right by the beach! The ground is lower than the sourrounding dunes, thats where the "sunken" name came from. Its a really nice walk, the trees are unique and very twisted, and the forest is full of birds and colorful turtles. Its actually kind of wierd, it doesnt feel like an island only an hr from New York, you get the impression of being somewhere upstate...
Fire Island is a 32-mile barrier island off the coast of Long Island, and has some of the best beaches anywhere in New York, including Lighthouse Beach very close to the Fire Island Lighthouse which is used as a nude beach by families, couples and singles. This is a very clean beach, and safe for anyone. Directions----
Robert Moses Causeway south to the end--turn east and go to the last parking lot. It fills up by mid morning so go early! Walk east along the beach until you see the "Nudists ahead" sign and enjoy yourself! There are several other nude beaches on Fire Island--check out the website for more info on them and how to get there.
Lighthouse lovers will enjoy the lighthouse right up the beach!
