Go up to Thessaly to see the Meteora monastaries, which were built in the 12th and 13th centuries, on huge pillars of stone - some of them are still in use by Orthodox monks and you can visit for a small fee..it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life to be inside a church covered in intricate frescoes, stained by centuries of smoke from...more

I am not a big fan of chinese restaurants but this one made me rethink my bias.It was not a dinky hole-in-the-wall. It was not dirty. It did not smell of boiled fur. You could watch the meal being prepared on the skillet. There were only 6 tables but they were exquisitely enameled black and white with real chinese paintings lacquered into the...more

This restaurant is purposely retro decor back to the 1950s. The materials used are modern plastics but the look and feel is "Happy Days". The franchise has been in the Rochester area since 1955 and my grandparents used to treat us to a Wahl's burger back then.Red and white and chrome dominate the color scheme; friendliness and a smile are the...more

The Rochester Genesee Regional Transit Authority has a few public transportation routes that finger out into the Greece area. In the attached map (see the website for better detail) the red and green and yellow and blue lines are the only places where the public transportation travels.
Most of the routes are east-west travel that takes you between Rochester and Greece with many local stops along the way. Part of the red and blue routes have north-south stops that allow you to connect between the other routes by means of a transfer.
The website for RGRTA is very good at telling you everything you need to know about using the transit system. Important facts are: exact change only or buy a bus pass; routes are tightly scheduled and maintain that schedule except in inclement weather; some buses (but not all) are equiped to allow handicap access and bike transport . (The LiftLine company in Rochester has great handicap facilities).
This is like a large indoor flea market. Over 200 artisans and antique vendors have individual displays and booths in this building. You'll find paintings and scupltures from local talent. Jewelry (newly crafted and also used); furniture from simple book stands to dining sets, some hand-crafted and others refurbished antiques; candles and quilts,...more
Greece is a town of malls. There is one strip of Ridge Road West where there were eight (count 'em, eight) malls within a 3-mile stretch. Two of the larger malls were actually within one hundred feet of each other, so several years ago Greece Town Mall and Longridge Mall bought the land between and built an extension that connected the two into one...more

We have many young high school students with affluent parents who have bought their children automobiles of their own. The high schools have had such a glut of student drivers that property taxes were raised to augment the parking lots at the schools. So given that we have 5 high schools in the area, that puts a lot of young, low-experience drivers...more
Don't forget to bring an umbrella. Rochester is one of those cities along Lake Ontario where a sunny sky does not last long. Water from the lake is scooped into the air with a southerly breeze and before you know it, you get a rainshower. We carry an umbrella in the trunk always.
Rain showers can even occur in the winter when the lake is warmer than the land and lake-effect storm bands develope into rain systems if the temperature creeps above 32F.

Because Greece is so close to Lake Ontario, we get a moderation in temperatures and weather conditions. The lake loses heat much slower than the land or air, so it tends to keep temperatures a bit warmer in winter. Also the lake heats up much slower than the land in summer which cools things down a bit.In the winter, we get some biting temperatures...more
