Just 10 miles east of Greenport is the Cross Sound Ferry Service to New London, Conneticut. The take off point is located just to the east of the town of Orient.
There are two choices in taking the ferry to New London. If you have a car or RV you must take the slower Auto Ferry. The trip to New London is about an hour and half through this means. If you are just going as a passenger you can take the Sea Jet. The trip takes only about 40 minutes or half the time as the auto ferry.
The ferry service operates daily from approximately 8 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. Times will change depending on the season of the year. The cost of bringing an auto on the ferry to New London is currently $ 54.00 one way and that fare includes one passenger. Additional passengers are $15.00. The cost of taking the Sea Jet is just over $21.00 one way, or $ 34 if you make the a round trip the same day.
The Sea Jet service appears to be on much more modern and up to date boats than the auto ferry. I only took the Sea Jet so I can't really compare the too.
Parking for the Orient Point to New London ferry is free on adjacent dirt lots.
Long Island Ferry or Cross-Sound Ferry. This is the ferry system out of New London, CT. This is a nice part of New England as well. If memory serves, I believe General Dynamics has a large shipbuilding facility right there also.
You can walk right on the ferry or take your car over. Cars are $36.00 and each additional passenger is $10.00. Being New England, everything is close to New London. Boston is 110 miles away, Providence is 61, Cape Cod is 125, and Nassau County(NYC) is about 75-95.
Definitely make reservations if you are traveling during peak times (Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, etc). Other than that get their earlier than later. As with most things, the service is always first come first serve.
