    Yatagan Kebab House: Excellent Kebabs!

    by teddy1066 Updated Apr 4, 2011

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Kebabs!!!!!

    The two things I like the most about Yatagan Kebab House is how friendly the staff are (Mustafa and company) and how tasty the kebabs are.

    I'd never had a kebab before in my life but as I stared at the lamb spinning round and round the staff ushered me in. They were friendly and talkative and I left with two pieces of baklava on the house! When I got home I couldn't believe how succulent the lamb kebab was.

    As I'm the curious sort...I wondered what Yatagan meant. Was it the Turkish word for lamb? Was it a neighbourhood in Istanbul? No. It's a curved blade Turkish sword. A bit like what they use to carve the meat. I imagine they'd be impressed if you told them you knew what Yatagan meant. You may walk out with a free piece of baklava!

    For a tasty Turkish Delight and friendly service I highly recommend Yatagan Kebab House.

    Favorite Dish: Try a kebab and a few falafels. For dessert have a piece of baklava...it was excellent!

    Dojo Restaurant: Wasabi on West 4th

    by teddy1066 Updated Apr 4, 2011

    Dojo Restaurant

    Dojo's a nice place for breakfast or brunch. It's a nice, clean restaurant usually full of students, yuppies, bohemians and families looking for a good brunch for a low price.

    The staff are from Poland, Russia, Israel, Mexico etc. so the Japanese cooking has a International appeal. If you're looking for a convenient, cheap and tasty meal it's a good restaurant to visit. The residents of 250 Mercer (the building above Dojo) call it Wasabi on West 4th. They're a witty bunch in the building;-)

    No credit cards accepted. Bring cash!

    Favorite Dish: I recommend bruch, the omlettes are very good and very reasonably priced. The burgers are served in a pita (strange but good) and the shrimp tempura is a great deal!

    Avoid the wings.

    John's of Bleecker Street: Best Pizza in New York

    by teddy1066 Written Jan 22, 2004

    Hungry?

    Simply the best! There's no real point trying to summarize in words just how good the pizza is. There is always a line to get in this place...I guess the word got out! So how good is it really? So good in fact that my wife (who hates pizza) keeps bugging me to take her back there. Seriously...if you get the chance to taste this coal oven pizza your life will never be the same. There's often celebrities here but the cool thing is is that everyone has to wait their turn. They wouldn't even let Al Pacino jump the line. You'll love this place.

    Celebrities who've dined here include: Al Pacino (frequently), Rudi, Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr. and 'The Mick'.

    Woody Allen and Mariel Hemingway ate here in 'Manhattan'.

    Favorite Dish: No need for any fancy or multiple toppings...just get a large pepperoni and a pitcher and you're good to go.

    Crif Dogs: Eat Me!

    by teddy1066 Updated Jan 22, 2004

    How lewd!

    Once again it is the cunning use of sexual inuendo that made me enter the madness that is Crif Dogs! Located in the East Village, Crif Dogs is a small but cozy hot dog restaurant. Should you tire of the street vendor 'dirty water dogs' I recommend trying a custom made Eat Me hot dog. There are always specials and plenty of toppings to choose from. It's tasty and it's cheap so you can't really complain!

    It's so cheap in fact that the sign outside the door abruptly states "Get your cheap ass in here!". Usually a younger crowd (early 20's) and certainly popular with students. I recommend giving one of their hot dog a day in court.

    Favorite Dish: Two hot dogs and a soda for less than $5. Toppings extra. Fries are also very good. A fun little joint, it also features the video games.

    A Salt & Battery: Best Fish & Chips in NY

    by teddy1066 Updated Jan 22, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Wot? No Mushy Peas?

    Ok...here's the deal. It's pretty tasty and if you're a British ex-pat or an adventurous American you'll like the fish (flaky) and probably the chips (soggy). The savaloy is an acquired taste...it is more full-flavoured sausage than saveloy...but beggars can't be choosers.

    Sadly, beggars couldn't afford to eat here. It's pretty good fish & chips by New York standards but it is expensive. I imagine it is cheaper for thinner people, but if you're 15 stone (215 pounds) expect to pay around $20 for one large fish & chips, saveloy and a IRN BRU.

    Favorite Dish: Large Cod = $6.99
    Chips = $3.50
    Saveloy = $4.00
    Can of IRN BRU = 2.50

    Sub Total = $16.99
    Tax = $1.47

    Total = $18.46
