    The Square in 1891

"Live all you can; it's a mistake not to. It doesn't so much matter what you do in particular, so long as you have your life. If you haven't had that, what have you had?"
    (Henry James)

Henry James lived near Washington Square Park in the 1800's. It inspired many of his writings, leading to the 1880 novel "Washington Square". A Hollywood film was made about it in 1997 starring Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Interestingly, there's a John Lennon-Sting-Henry James connection here : they were all Englishman in New York.

There are over 20,000 bodies of yellow fever victims were buried under the park and during the 1800's the park was the site of many public executions. The Hanging Tree is located at the north-west corner of the park.

A wonderful spot in the Spring and Summer, but a dubious den of dealers in the Winter. On West 4th Street, the NYPD have a lookout post to observe the nightly proceedings...

    Edgar Allan Poe

Coming from Baltimore it's kismet for us to live a block from Poe's home. Edgar Allan Poe lived on West 3rd Street in the early 1840's. In 1844, while living at 85 West 3rd Street, Poe wrote "the Raven". NYU has been trying to knock it down for years, but what do they know? This place should be a historic landmark.
