Food. Fresh and sinful.
Ambience. Recently experienced a complete overhaul. Decor is uninspired contemporary. A bit at odds with the Soul Food served.
Service. The employees provide the warmth to what would otherwise be an indifferent atmosphere.
Dress. Any which way you choose.
Favorite Dish: Don't let the name fool you. This place is for anybody but wimps. You've got to arrive with a significant appetite and a sweet toothe to match. The peach cobbler and sweet potato pie are all very fine and good (not bad for up North). But for the truly decadent, your world is the Red Velvet Cake. The origins of Red Velvet Cake are hotly contested. For those that aren't familiar with Soul Food, this is a genre of food developed in the South by African slaves, 1800s-today, that migrated to the North with the African-Americans. The northern version of Soul Food began to develop its own nuances, and I would argue the Red Velvet Cake, not found as often in the South, may be its ultimate contribution to the genre.
i have lived in this neighborhood for 5 years and have watched this space change 4 or 5 times. It seems like these guys finally have it right.
The food is excellent - the menu is kind of like an upscale version of Toast and the atmosphere is better than anything in this neighborhood. What really surprised me were the prices - the prices were extremely reasonable for the quality and portion sizes they were giving. I had the meatloaf (which I had to bring half home in a doggie bag) which was incredible with just the right amount of spice, and my husband had the Steak, which seemed like a great value for 14.95. The drinks are very well poured, and we had a great bottle of wine for just $25.
they are buidling a Tiki bar in the back, which wll definitely be unique to this area. I think this place will be here for a long time to come.
Welcome to the Hood !!!!!
Favorite Dish: Sliced steak - great portion, cheap prices, amazing sauce
Jerk wings - best wings I ever had - different than typical Barbqued wings that you can get anywhere
Food. Downright tasty.
Ambience. Humble and clean.
Service. Friendly and leisurely.
Dress. Casual. However on Sunday mornings, you may want to up your game.
Price. Best deal you'll find in NYC.
Favorite Dish: Don't get me wrong. There's a time and a place for Sylvia's. And for me, that time is any Monday when the house feature is chicken and dumplings. But for all around best soul food joint in Harlem, head to Spoon Bread. The fried chicken is scrumptious, the fried catfish savory and you cannot leave without sampling the freshly baked, slathered in butter, cornbread.
Never forget to spent a dinner in the world class famous Jazz Bar with your beloved ones. Never says never again.
