Have a designated driver for wine tastings

by windoweb Written Oct 1, 2007
    At Six Mile Creek Vineyard

In the heart of the Finger Lakes is the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail - we tried four wineries. We went to Six Mile Creek, Americana, Lucas and Hosmer. We did tastings at all four and bought wine from each establishment.

My personal favorite was the semi-white wine Raspberry Rhapsody from Hosmer Winery.
This wonderfully aromatic treat is made from semi-sweet white wine infused with locally grown sun-ripened red raspberries. Intensely flavorful with lively acid, it’s delicious by itself, as an aperitif, with chocolate or as an interesting addition to your cooking.

    UK is warmer, honest

A statement rather than a warning. We left the UK with the first signs of spring evident - many trees with green shoots, bits of blossom creeping through. NY in Easter is a good 4 weeks behind the UK, on account of the harsher winter no surprise really. I would love to go back and see the full colour of NY state

    Snow in spring

    This was in mid-april!

Ithaca is a beautiful, pretty place. I have seen it in almost all seasons. To me, may to october is the best time to travel there. You should be aware that especially in spring you might still have very cold, even snowy weather - even in April or May. You may think spring is coming, and then, wham, a new snowfall. It can get on your nerves when you're desperately waiting for spring.

    Steep streets of Ithaca

There used to be a trolley like in San Francisco

Ithaca is a bit like San Francisco in this regard. It has very steep and winding streets, which can be strange and unusual to a flat-land-person like me. I have never driven on anything like Ithaca streets before, and wonder how people do it. I would always be afraid of stalling all the time, sliding backwards etc. In the winter when Ithaca is all snowy and icy, it could not be fun!
My boyfriend has been used to this for ages and does a great job, but people with less experience might find Ithaca driving a bit difficult.

    Don't Jump!

by yooperprof Written May 31, 2003
This shouldn't be your last sight

Things really aren't as bad as they seem. Ithaca's gorges offer temptation to the depressed and suicidal. Bridges over the gorges have attracted many jumpers. As a deterrant, there are suicide prevention phones at strategic points on pathways approaching the bridges. Ithaca would be an interesting place to work at one of those hotline centers.
