    Sunrise in Lake Placid

Favorite thing: “How glorious a greeting the sun gives the mountains” ― John Muir

To watch the best sunrises in Lake Placid, I recommend driving out to the Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds just 5 minutes from the center of Lake Placid. The sun rises over the High Peaks of Adirondack State Park. Often there is fog low on the ground at the foot of the mountains for some dramatic scenery.

You can't miss the horse show grounds as you will pass them as you enter Lake Placid and it is just beneath the Olympic ski jump towers.

    Boats on Lake Placid
    4 more images

Favorite thing: New York state is not just New York City. There are a lot of beautiful spot all around the state. Lake Placid is a great place for a weekend retreat or for a camping trip. The town of Lake Placid is very well developed ever since the Winter Olympic Games in 1980. There are several picturesque inns on it's shores and restaurants with great views of the lake. Take a boat tour on the lake and you'll have tons of fun. The tour guides are really entertaining. Besides the Lake Placid itself, there are a lot of places around it you can go to for a side trip. Lake Saranac is 15 minutes away; High Falls Gorge is a lovely spot on the Ausale river too; but the most amazing natural wonder is Ausable Chasm, be sure to bring a lot of film or a high capacity memory card for you camera.

Fondest memory: On our way back we took a small side trip to see the Ausable Chasm and then saw a sign for Lake Champlain. After driving in the woods for about 10 minutes, all of a sudden we drove in straight on the beach and our jaws dropped. There was no sign of the shore on the other side; it looked huge. My friend thought it was the ocean. So he asked the ferry attendant what it was. It was Lake Champlain.

    Peak of 4100-ft Mt. Cascade

Favorite thing: We enjoyed the opportunity to do some relatively easy mountain climbing on the well-worn (thanks to ancient glaciers) Adirondack Mountains in upstate-New York. The weather conditions in mid-September turned out to be just right for us.

Fondest memory: On this trip, it was relaxing on top of Cascade Mt. with our picnic lunch and just enjoying the view. The trip down was easy and then it was a relatively quick drive to the Interstate highway and onward to Albany for business the next day!

    Autumn Leaves

Favorite thing: Many people visit here during autumn to view the vibrant colors of the leaves.
Peak season is usually the last week in September and first week in October ,but this can vary from year to year depending upon the weather. The amount of rain, the temperature and wind can greatly affect when peak season will be.
You can check this website during autumn months for updates on how the foliage is progressing

Fondest memory: Seeing the gorgeous varieties of red, orange, and yellow leaves on the mountains ,highlighted by the sun and reflecting on the many lakes here.Simply stunning!

    Winter in the Mountains

    Shroon Lake area of NY

Favorite thing: In early March, 2003 I was back in Albany again for another meeting. This time, I drove down from Montreal on Interstate 87. Going back north the weather turned to snow as I reached the Lake Placid area and continued to snow lightly almost all the way to Montreal. It was OK driving at a reduced pace, even though a couple of vehicles ended in the ditch near Plattsburg, NY. One of the hazards of this route during the winter months. I had my camera with me but the weather and lack of scenic pull-overs on the highway prevented me from getting any decent photos.

Fondest memory: Not one of my fondest memories, but this photo of my rental car was taken at a rest-stop on Interstate-87 at Schroon Lake, not far from Ticonderoga and south of Lake Placid area. This was just before I started to encounter the snow on the way north to Montreal.

All the Dutch who won medals.

    by Monique_T Updated Dec 22, 2002

Favorite thing: I don't think you can read it very clearly but there were a few Dutch guys who won. And you can imagine we are (still) proud of that.

Fondest memory: My best memory of Lake Placid was not being there but remembering the Olympic Games, watching it on tv and see how the Dutch did their games.

Favorite thing: Get out into the mountains and hike around. The High Peaks area is just glorious any time of year.

Fondest memory: Climb to the top of a mountain and see the landscape spread before you clothed in the colored leaves of autumn is just breath taking.

    A tri-lake view

Favorite thing: There's more than just one lake in the area, so check out the surroundings. It's all good.

Fondest memory: The mountainous region with all the foliage turning and the lakes in the same view. Breath-taking.
