Lake Placid Things to Do

  • Adventures in Lake Placid

Living just fifteen minutes from Lake Placid for the past eighteen years has given me great appreciation for its beauty and everything it has to offer. Growing up spending days playing outdoors and exploring the wilderness, has made Lake Placid one of my favorite places in the world. Surrounded by lakes and rivers that flow through its towering...

  • Swim in a mountain lake!

On a hot summer day there is nothing better than cooling off in a mountain lake. One of the easiest areas to access not far outside Lake Placid is Cascade Lakes Day Use Area. They are two long and narrow lakes near the base of Cascade Mountain, one of the fame 46'ers. There is a patch of land that separates the two lakes and several picnic tables....

Just outside of Lake Placid is the Olympic Jumping Complex. Most people pass these on their way into Lake Placid. An interesting site and they are open for tours during the summer. There is a fee to take the elevator to the top and the tour. It is $11.00 if there is no event going on at the complex.Hours: Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. May 1 - June 17...

Take a ski lift and then an elevator to the top of the Olympic ski jumps! I really enjoyed this more than I expected! The views are spectactular and you can stand right where the ski jumpers are before they make their jump! An added bonus when we were visiting, was that there were some atheletes training and we were able to watch them! I had never...

My family and I took a ride with the Adirondack Equine Center while visiting Lake Placid last week. It was fantastic. They start the ride right in town along Mirror Lake and some pretty amazing views. I couldn't believe how well the horses looked and behaved. My 7 year old daughter really took a shine to Comanche (the horse) and the staff took...

  • Nice outdoor seating

I've eaten here many times over the years but always for lunch. They have great outdoor seating where I always sit to eat. The wait staff are usually attentive. The food is great for lunch with very good options. Also part of this location is the Great Adirondack Brewing Co. They have a wide variety of beer they brew. I'm not much of a beer drink...

  • Fun, great bartenders....

Nice place to go and hang out. the bartenders there are great and have terrific personalities. The place is pretty big, esp. for the area it's in, Main Street, Lake Placid is pretty jam-packed. The only thing we weren't happy with was the DJ. He seemed more interested in spinning for himself rather then the patrons. We all went up and request some...

  • Wings and Beer

I can't remember the name of the bar, but it was a mexican themed bar/restaurant on the edge of Lake Placid going to Saranac Lake. We ordered the happy hour beer and wings. The beer was cold and the wings were HOT!. I guess they don't really have a medium in Mexico. The bartender was awesome and was cool to chat with. There was no dress code.

Much more relaxed setting. Wood interior, large bar, a place to sit, relax and eat and drink. They also brew their own beers here so be sure to give one of those a try. Casual, in fact when a went the bartender was in full punk garb, she was the most casual in the place by far

Lake Placid Transportation

  • The Car Ride Up - From Albany

First, make sure you have enough gas to get there. From Albany, NY, drive North on I-87 until you get to Exit 30. This part of I-87 was voted the most scenic highway at one point in time. Be careful of state troopers in the middle median (at those No-U-turn areas) because they will pull you over if you go more than 10mph over the speed limit. There...

As I drove down from Montreal to Albany in March, 2004 I had to pass through the Adirondack Mountains near Lake Placid. The warmer weather meant that these sheets of ice were...

  • Some Driving Tips for Whiteface ...

White Mountain Memorial Highway is a very well maintained road, but you should take some caution while driving on it. 1. It may take you a while to even be able to drive on this road if it is a very busy weekend. Only so many cars are allowed at a time because there is limited parking at the top. 2. This ride is very scenic, but be sure to keep your...

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We learned from a local that it is common to bring a backpack with beer to store in the chalet half way down the hill. Since the choice of beer is pretty much non-existent and what is there is expensive, it's a good idea to bring a small backpack with your favourite beverage. That way you can stop half way down and enjoy the sun while sipping some suds.

Use the picnic tables at the top of the first chair lift. The scenery is great.

Lake Placid Warnings and Dangers

  • Lock it up!

Just be sure to lock your car. There aren't too many high paying jobs in the area (year round), and 'boys will be boys' when there's nothing else to do. I don't want to sound discriminitory, but all I'm saying is that crime happens if you're not smart about things. Park your car in lighted areas. Lock your car, and don't leave valuables in plain...

  • Whiteface AKA Iceface skiing

Whiteface mountain, which is the main Lake Placid ski destination and the hill that held the Olympics, is a very icy hill. The wind blows across it and any snow that is there in the morning is gone by the afternoon. If you're skiing there, make sure your skiis are sharpened. The picture is of a friend of mine who decided he didn't need snowboard...

Lake Placid Tourist Traps

  • Don't get ripped off at the souvenir...

Along the main road that goes thru Lake Placid is a long string of shops. Make sure you do a cost comparison if you really want that sweatshirt, t-shirt or other souvenir. You may find the prices are a little lower (~$5 or so) if you look for the items in the adjacent towns. Know your prices. Ask if there's "any savings" if you bought 3 or more...

Don't get me wrong, the falls are pretty, but there is beauty everywhere in the Adirondacks which you can see for free. Maybe I...

  • Go hiking!!

On your way to Lake Placid, you'll pass some great areas to go hiking! During good weather, you'll see cars parked along Rt 9 after you've gotten off the exit 30 on I-87. In fact, the first thing you'll pass is a natural spring on the left after you get off the exit, less than a mile down Rt 9. Route 9 turns into Rt 73, which takes you in to Lake...
