The nuclear plant at Nine Mile Point near Lakeview, NY (just northeast of Oswego,NY) has a demonstration layout of how nuclear plants operate to provide electric power for the community. The show-and-tell is aimed at showing how benign nuclear power can be and how good it is for the environment and how safe it is.
Takes about one-half hour to see and hear the demonstration.
Because of the new laws for Homeland Security, you can no longer drive into the Nine Mile Point area. The closest we could get was no closer than 300 yards away at a guard station they have erected on the branch highway (and I mean ARMED guards, who kindly but firmly directed us to turn around IMMEDIATELY).
There is little out in this rural area other than some homes and farms along route 1A and its side streets. There is little crime.
Tourists can feel safe in this area; at least as safe as in your hometown. So just do the same things you would do at home to be safe and have a nice time here.
