The stone labryinth at Avalon Park in Stony Brook

A great place to go on Long Island for some peace and tranquility is Avalon Park in Stony Brook. There is a beautiful duck pond with a mill that provides feed for the ducks, geese and swans that are very accostomed to people feeding them. A word of warning for the squeamish....these buggers are not afraid of people and will walk right up to you. It freaked out my kids who where shorter than the swans!

Beyond the pond there is an entrance into Avalon walking trails. There is a series of wooded trails that pass by little ponds where ducks and turtles can be seen. The path is made of boards and bridges that look brand new and feels like a boardwalk in the forest. Keep walking and you will find a very cool labryinth made out of stone. Keep walking even still and you will cross into a heavily wooded series of trails that leads to a field of flowers.

You could spend a good two hours there or so. There are no parks that we saw, pretty much nature. It is very quiet and was a beautiful getaway.

One of the most fun things to do with kids in Long Island is Adventureland in Farmingdale New York. Be aware the park IS expensive but not even half as expesive as Six Flags and not as crowded. This is our second year in a row going to Adventureland and both times we were able to get on rides right away.

There is a section for smaller kids that consists of little car and buggy rides, a great driving ride that goes through the Eiffel Tower, small water rides and a train that takes a tour of the entire park. The majority of these rides can be ridden by little ones under 48 inches without an adult.

Further in the park are larger rides such as the Frisbee and the Hurricane. The Frisbee is an incredibly fun ride that goes back and forth like a pendulum while spinning at a high velocity. It goes SO high that you almost go upside down. The Hurricane is a roller coaster which is pretty lame for Roller Coaster standards but kids over 48 inches can go on it and it's a blast for them. There was no wait for either ride.

There is a haunted house ride which is really lame but the robot man vomiting outside of the haunted house makes up for the lame ride, it's hilarious!!!

the east end of the park features a large water ride with a big drop, a swinging pirate ship ride and a cool old time car ride that the kids love because they feel like they are driving a real car.

You can buy a bracelet which allows you to ride all day or you can purchase tickets. I say go for the bracelet.

All in all, Adventureland has been great fun for our vacations the last two years.

After a fun, but hot day at Adventureland in Farmingdale we decided that a Chinese Buffet was the right thing to do with a party of 6 kids and 7 adults. Wrong move!!! although it was convenient and the food was decent, it cost $17.50 per person for an all you can eat buffet. I have never heard of anything that expensive. The Chinese buffets around us in Chicago range from $7.99 to $9.99

The kid's meals weren't as expensive, it was $11.50 which is still pretty outrageous. We were there on a Friday and noticed that during the week the price is $11.50 for an adult buffet, but that's still too expensive in my book.

The food was okay, not great and the prices were outrageous. I do not recommend the Grand China Buffet in Farmingdale NY.
