Located in the town of Centerport, on the northshore of Long Island, the Mansion is located on part of the legendary Gold Coast. It was built by William K. Vanderbilt II, Great Grandson of the families Patriarch, Cornelius Vanderbilt. It was constructed in the early 20th Century and expanded over the course of the next 30 years. Though small compared to other Vanderbilt Homes, it is none the less beautiful in both setting and decor. In addition to the Mansion, there is also a Marine Museum and Plaeterium on the grounds. A visit here is definitely worth a few hours. The guided tour of the Manion itself is 1 hour long. Address: 180 Littleneck Road. There is a collection of 3 or 4 historic properties all together in Cutchogue...along RTe 24. This 1600's treasure is evidentally in need of some serious restoration to correct ageing underpinnings. It is one of the finest examples of 1600's architecture I've seen in a long time. I noticed there isn't a lot of historic architecture in NOrth Fork, so I was glad to see someone caring about their history here. I imagine the farms were the foremost thought in everyone's mind...as opposed to preserving old buildings. Leave a Comment

Peconic Winery is between Peconic and New Suffolk. They were under renovation when I got there, but the owner was there and chatted for a while about their wines and other local growers. Very pleasant man. I would return again. Came away with a sampling of his wines...some of which are award winners. Most of the wineries specialize in Chardonnay and Merlot. I don't know enough about wines to know all the reasons..but I"m sure it has to do with the type of grapes that grow well in their climate conditions. I noticed it was always humid in NOrth Fork. Water on both sides...must make all the growing super. Leave a Comment Directions: Find it along Rte 25

Macari Winery was recommended to me when I left home so I started by visiting their tasting room first. Their facility is large and very "California". There is a huge tasting room and an enclosed porch where you can take your bottle of wine and sit looking out at the vineyard. They offer wine associated gifts including some gorgeous wine decanters...glass ... made in Poland. Naturally, I would favor the Polish goods. I thought their Merlot was excellent, but they also have a Chardonnay fermented in steel which I found crisp and refreshing. I loaded several bottles into the trunk of the car...so I could gift them to friends and family...save some for holidays. My innkeeper recommended a winery that was closed for renovations...so I asked the owner of that winery to recommend yet another. He was very accomodating and suggested I visit another award winner nearby. The winery was Bedell. Their tag line is "something Remarkable is Happening on the North Fork of Long Island" And ... indeed it is. These wineries are top notch. Their facilities are beautifully designed...their fields as neat as pins. I found their wines delightful. Of course everyone has a favorite...so there was a Merlot for one family member, desert wine for another, Chardonnay for another...and pretty soon the trunk of my car was full. Great way to spend the day. I was alone on my expedition...but if you were with friends, you could really enjoy some time sitting around polishing off a bottle of wine in their patio areas and porches. The weather was gorgeous when I was there. This is the way I like to start my holiday shopping. Leave a Comment
