Deer and Lyme Disease
Lyme Disease is a debilitating infectious illness caused by a tick borne bacteria causing rash, joint pains and arthritis, fever, and occasionally severe neurologic disorders. The ticks are carried by deer. Long before the illness was named after a town in Connecticut, it was known as "Hamptons Elbow", after the joint often affected by this disorder.
The East End is overrun with deer, destroyers of gardens and involved in innumerable occasionally fatal auto accidents. As they often are too stupid to run away, the unlucky human is easily able to approach the deer and their tick infested fur.
Here, deer on a driveway stared at us as we approached, mindless ( them and us ).
If driving around on your own, it is advisable to use a good road map. In some areas, such as out in Suffolk County, it is easy to get lost if you do not know where you're going. Signs are not alway easy to see, especially at night.
Blood Suckers:Ticks and Mosquitoes
During the summer months, if you are hiking or doing any kind of outdoor activity where these critters may be present, take adequate precautions. For mosquitoes, apply repellent. For ticks, wear socks over pants and check each other upon returning indoors.
