When we entered Grand Central Station, I was struck by the feeling of history and romance of train travel.

The statues above the main entrance are sculptures of Mercury (representing trade and profit, merchants and travelers), Hercules (representing strength and bravery), and Minerva (representing wisdom, medicine and trade). Within the main entranceway you cannot help but notice the vaulted ceiling. The ceiling is decorated with the zodiac designs and pinlights create familiar constellations.

Upon the request of Vanderbilt, the railway station was created and opened in 1871. The station was never quite adequate and insufficient space eventually led to the building being demolished. In 1913, the station was recreated into the style that we are all familiar with and recently, Grand Central just completed a huge restoration process.

Many new shops and eateries have been added and there is also a food court with many different types of food and musicians of all kinds perform at various places around the station.

Group and individual tours are available, but it's just as easy to walk around and take in the sights for yourself.

Grand Central Terminal is opened daily from 5:30am until 1:30am.

One of the most well known area of Manhattan...Times Square. Between 42nd and 48th street there is a spot where Broadway and seventh make a lazy "X"...that is where you will find Times Square.

Up until the mid to late 80s, Times Square was a bit "seedy" with it's porn, prositution corners, high crime and theft rate. However, after the resurgence of interest and a mega face lift, Times Square is back to it's former glory.

Times Square is residence to Good Morning America, MTV, WWE New York, ESPN Zone, Virgin Megastore, and the world's largest video screen, proported to be 8 stories tall.

Some well known eateries in Times Square are Chevy's Tex/Mex Grill, Applebee's, Planet Hollywood, Leo Lindy's, home of the Lindy's New York cheesecakes, and of course McDonalds.

And we must not forget...Times Square is the home of the ever popular Dick Clark's New Year's Eve Bash.

Who doesn't know Brooklyn Bridge ? Just take a subway to the Brooklyn Bridge station, and you can walk across. One way walk takes 20 minutes. Do it on a nice day, best if towards end of the day, as dusk falls. It would be too hot otherwise. Be sure to walk on the side designated for walkers, 'cause the other side is for cyclists only!

Central Park is a MUST-DO thing when you are in Manhattan. Particularly in spring, the cherry blossoms and other trees are flowering. It is beautiful! You have 2 choices: first take a subway towards Metropolitan Museum of Art (in the East side) and enter the park that way. Or Subway to the West side, and enter via Strawberry Fields. I recommend the Western route. This is because as you walk past Strawberry Fields, there is a little booth with a very helpful man in it who can give you tips and directions and a map of Central Park!

This is a MUST-SEE museum. Entrance fee is USD15.00 for adults and USD10 for children. Then again, it is only a "suggested" feee. Apparently you may choose to pay less! I just paid the 15 bucks. I spent 3 solid hours wandering around. It has beautiful painting, sculptures etc. The halls are (not exact name) Medieval Armour and Weaponry, Eastern (Tibet / Mongolian etc) artifects, Egyptian, American History, Renaissance etc. I love the paintings! They even have reproductions of the living room/ dining hall / bedrooms of castles in France, etc!

Battery Park is a serene hangout... study, have some lunch, whatever you feel like. Lady Liberty is a nice view from most areas of the park.

What can a person say about Central Park. It's huge, natural, and a lot to offer the hiker or outdoor person. All nestled within the best city anywhere.
Go to Tavern On The Green and take a horse drawn carriage ride throught the park.
There's many things to check out, too much to write... check out their website if you want to know more.

The energy at Grand Central (Terminal) is intense. It's a fun place to visit.

What a treat (and view).... the top of the ESB. Unfortunately, we were there after September 11th so were robbed of the beautiful view of the Twin Towers. A bittersweet experience.

Visit the official ESB website for detailed information.
