Every Fall the New Paltz Chamber of Commerce sponsors the taste of New Paltz. This event is all about the food. Local restaurants, eateries, pubs, diners, bakeries etc. set up stand with their best dishes and offer you "tastes" of them for $1 to $2. There's stuff for the children too, pony rides, face painting, arts and crafts.
This even is usually held the 3rd Sunday in September from 11 AM to 5 PM at the Ulster County Fair grounds.
Every year the entertainment on center stage changes, but you can almost guarantee that there will be some sort of athletic demonstration and a bunch of little bands. This year there was a small petting zoo for the children and 2 of those blow up jumping contraptions.
The easiest way to get there is to take route 32 north to Modena, turn onto 44/55 west, follow through Gardiner to Albany Post Road, make a left and follow the road until you see the fair grounds.

A nice small village about 4 miles from Mohonk Mountain. The center of the village has nice historical houses. You can also see some old aqueducts from the Delaware & Hudson Canal. You can also take a small hike and see the Falls on Roundout Creek.
Take Mountain Rest Rd to where it meets NY Route 213 in High Falls

This is the oldest grist millstilloperating in Upstate NY. About 10 minutes outside New Paltz near Gardiner.
ITs a quick stop but the store has hidden delights such as stone ground flour and spices and other goodies. The BEST is their pancake mix.THE most flavorful pancakes you will ever have (only use REAL maple syrup of course!)
I havent been back yet since new owners took over in 2001 - but it seems they've added other services such as an Inn.

I'm a sucker for a farm market, fresh fruit and veg straight from the farm, nothing beats it especially if it is all organic. The Wallkill View Farm Market located on Route 299W, past New Paltz almost fits the bill. It is a great market set amid the beautiful countryside, just not organic. The summer-tomatoes and corn, autumn-squash and apples and winter- squash-who needs meat!!!!
