New Paltz Things to Do

  • Jean Hasbrouck House1712

This is the Jean Hasbrouck House, built in 1712. This Vter was told on the tour that the home is very uique type of structure built in colonial America architecture style ( well I did not quite get it either but the main beams indicates that Jacob built this place in 1712. For Vters in Eruope and Asia yup you are not impressed with 1712 being old...

  • Wallkill Valley Rail Trail

Whether you walk it, bike it or ride your horse, this is a great way to get your exercise and see some of the most spectacular views of the Schwangunk Ridge. The trail is 12.2 miles in length officially, but you can continue beyond the New Paltz Rosendale town line for about another mile or so. I biked the entire trail round trip with my friend...

  • Hiking around Lake Minnewaska State Park

Entrance fee of $6.00 or $7.00 per car, you get access to 2 lakes and numerous hiking/biking/cross country skiing trails. What a peaceful and wonderful time to spend in any season, but I favor hiking in the autumn...

  • THE MOHONK PRESERVE

The Mohonk Preserve is the largest member and visitor-supported nature preserve in New York State. The land occupied by The Mohonk Preserve was the first land trust established to protect the northern Shawangunk Ridge. The Shawangunk ridge is a section of the Appalachian Mountains. The Mohonk Preserve provides access to over 6,500 acres in the...

  • Minnewaska State Park

At least once a week you can find me and Patrick hiking the trails in this glorious state park. The trails vary in length, when Patrick is with me I generally take the red trail. It runs around Lake Minnewaska providing great views from the cliff and the base. Depending on which way you start, you can finish with a refreshing dip at the swimming...

  • HIKING AT MOHONK MOUNTAIN HOUSE

Mohonk Mountain House is more than a lavish hotel. It's also a great place to hike, rock scramble and sit and relax. Richie and I spent one day of our vacation exploring the various trails and sites of The Mohonk Mountain House. We decided first to go to the Skytop Tower. There are three options to get there. The first is the easiest, it's a...

  • THE BEST WRAPS IN NEW PALTZ

I fell in love with this cute little eatery from the very first time I tried it at The Taste of New Paltz 5 years ago. There's indoor and outdoor seating for patrons to enjoy. On a warm Fall day, it was nice for us to enjoy our meal outside. The noise of the cars passing by takes away from the whole experience, but once you bite into your wrap, you...

  • Hiking Mohonk? Eat at the picninc lodge!

If you walk up - its about 1.5miles to top from the Montain House entrance parking lot. Worth the walk. For about $20 for 2people - eat huge sandwiches on homemade bread (tuna melts are lush), enjoy homemade soup and pie. Wood fired pizzas too! All in front of a fire -Fall only. Open weekends only in Spring and Fall. All good

  • IMAGINE THAT, NEW PALTZ HAS A MICRO...

My friend Patrick and I decided at the last minute to bring the kids out for dinner. So he suggested we come here because on Wednesday nights kids under 12 eat for free. I had to work late so he picked little Patrick up at my folks house and they all met me at the restaurant. If you don't like kids, do not come here on a Wednesday night, because...

  • Tiny Place with Big Flavor

This is one of Mom's favorite places to have lunch so we have often taken her here when we are visiting. It's a average sized place with two levels. The first floor has seating along with the bakery counter, upstairs is smaller with a few scatterd tables. The decor is very plain with nothing that really catches the eye. Liz calls it a barn with...

  • THIS RESTAURANT CLOSED IN SEPTEMBER 2008

This used to be a nice little family owned Italian restaurant. Unfortunately it closed down back in September of 2008 and remains closed to this day. When you walk by it you can read their old menu posted in their window, but alas, the windows are painted over and not a light to be seen for months now. Patrick goes to school with the grandchildren...

  • Dancing for Gay Boys & Girls & Their...

Perhaps the largest gay club in the Hudson Valley, Primetime has a good-sized dance floor, a large first floor bar, an upstairs bar, seating and circulating balconies around the dance floor, and two stories of outdoor space. While people of all ages frequent this club, the crowd skews young, owing, undoubtedly, to its 18+ door policy. The music is...

  • BEER AND DANCING

I've been to McGillicuddy's on a couple of occassions. The first time I went with a group of high school friends. While two of them got so s**t faced that they could barely walk, another one professed his never ending high school obsession with me. We went on a Saturday night and this place was jam packed with college kids trying to hook up with...

Walking through the Wave's door is like entering into a Caribbean resort. With its brightly colored walls in a calming aqua hue, along with accents of palm trees and colorful leather couches, the Wave provides an oasis from the harsh elements outdoors. The club combines an enormous dance space with a quaint bar area and a large lounge, offering...

  • BEER AND FOOD, WHO NEEDS ANYTHING ELSE

My first trip to P & G's was around Christmas of 2004. I met a group of high school friends here for drinks before we went across the street for more drinks and some dancing. P & G's has a decent selection of beer and wine and it serves the usual Americana menu. Appetizers start off at about $4.00 and dinner around $12.00. The food is nothing to...

  • LOTS OF BEER AND GREAT MUSIC TOO

Snug Harbor Bar and Grill is affectionately known as Snugs to many of the locals and the college crowd. I like Snugs for the variety of live entertainment. Every weekend a different up and coming or already established band seems to be playing at Snugs. This tends to be a hang out for the younger crowd which makes it easy to get free drinks. Those...

New Paltz Transportation

  • Transportation SUCKS here! Im stuck

This really sucks, I am sitting in my hotel room stranded because the ONLY taxi service in this city only has one driver, He took my name down and I am going to get a taxi in an hour and a half. If you cant come here in a car, at least think ahead and rent a bike for the entire time you are here, I came for the skydiving, cant wait for that, but I...

  • DRIVE TO NEW PALTZ AND MOHONK MOUNTAIN...

To get to the Village of New Paltz, Mohonk Mountain House, or Minnewaska State Park, you are going to need some form of motorized transportation. I would not suggest trying to bike to the Mountain House or Minnewaska State Park from the Village. The roads are steep and loaded with semi-blind spots.

  • WALK THE VILLAGE

While in the Village of New Paltz, I highly suggest you find a place to park your car and walk the rest. The shops and restaurants are close enough that you walk just about anyplace here. If you decide to head up to Mohonk Mountain House, you'll need your car, since public transportation isn't very handy here.

  • TREASURES FROM THE HIMALYAS

I fell in love with this small shop the second I walked into it. They have an impressive collection of hand-crafted items from the Himalayas including rugs, jewelry, clothing, and ritual items. The clothing runs about $20 an item depending on what you buy and the rugs can be anything from average to out of this world. The jewelry is also very...

When you enter this store you can't help but fall in love with all the great scents. There is a wide variety of candles to chose from in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Every fall this family that lives off of route 32 in New Paltz, holds a huge barn sale. This barn sale unlike other barn sales in the area is very unique. New Paltz Warnings and Dangers

  • JAY WALKERS

If there is one thing New Paltz has more of than hippies, its jay walkers. A jay walker is a person who refuses to use the cross walks and darts out into traffic, most commonly from in between cars. This behavior causes drivers to slam on their breaks, honk their horns and use rude gestures. When driving here, get your eyes open, especially during...
