    PrePaid, No-Contract Phones

by virtualpatrick Updated Jun 25, 2011

Favorite thing: Try Radio Shack and Best Buy. Check out the carrier / brands on the left navigation bar.

Verizon Wireless has the widest coverage throughout the US, but since you are staying within the NYC - Boston corridor, coverage with other providers should not be an issue.

Virgin Mobile phone actually uses Sprint Wireless as the carrier so you should be alright. Other popular ones are ATT GoPhone, T-Mobile, Tracfone, Boost.

Top-off / prepaid refill cards can be found in alot of places where gift cards are sold - grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.

Favorite thing: Do be aware that you will need a tri-band phone when in the States & you should change the network selection to manual. I noticed that my phone lost signal plenty of times in NYC which must be because of the high rise buildings. Should you have friends in NYC calling them or even texting them from your uk mobile will mean they will be paying a premium rate for your convenience. I decided to buy a prepay phone for $30 which came with a $10 pay as you go voucher free which meant NYC friends not penalised by an international call. You can purchase a prepay phone at most corner stores or a drugstore

    Favorite thing: Ladies and Gents!

I have been searching for info about a company called Does anyone have any info that they can throw at me?

It seems that the service is: "Get a local phone number in one of the listed below countries and redirect it to any phone number in the world. The calls will be charged at local rate for the callers regardless of whether they are calling from landline or mobile phones."

The reason that I mention them is because they are the only ones that have a free trial.

Can someone please hit me up with any kind of info?!?!

    Thanks a ton

    Phones, public or cell?

Favorite thing: Believe me, I tell no lies, if your in town for more than a week, you might want to get yourself a declining balance cell phone. Pay phones here are soooo hit or miss, mostly swaying more towards the miss half. If they not stealing your quarters with no connection then they may be doubling as a public toilet or trashcan. Go to Virgin Records in Union Square or Times Square to get a phone that works, I'm sure there is other places you can get these as well.

Favorite thing: When you are in NYC, you will see so many people using their mobiles. It is like if New Yorkers cannot live without them. Sometimes it can be really disturbing.
