The titanic Dog
Favorite thing: Jeff Koons's highly recognizable dog named Puppy - a symbol of "love, warmth and happiness" - has been exhibited in the U.S. for the first time above Manship's Prometheus in the sunken plaza in front of the Rockefeller Plaza, overlooking the Channel Gardens in July 2000.
First created in 1992 for a temporary exhibition in the city of Arolson/Germany.
Fondest memory: Rising more then 13 meter, the sculpture was constructed from steel armatures to hold over 25 tons of soil and an internal irrigation system. Over 50,000 flowering plants grew from this structure, including Petunias, Lobelias, Begonias, Impatiens and other annuals.
Location: Fifth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets.

Hold hands or the railing
Favorite thing: After being awed by that gigantic Holiday tree...why not try ice skating in the famed Rockefeller ice rink...It's romantic especially when your special someone has to hold your hand the whole time ;) Or you could also do what I did and hold on to the railing ;p
Unless of course, you're Michelle Kwan.
While holding on to the railing you can glance over and gaze at the awesome gilded statue of Prometheus. In Greek mythology, good ol' Prometheus brought fire to mankind. Sculpted by Paul Manship.
Visit the Rockefeller Christmas Tree
Favorite thing: If you are in the city around the holidays, and there's nothing like NYC around the holidays...(of course, there's the throng of people BUT ) the awesome sight of the Rockefeller Christmas tree and everything decked out with twinkly lights, just brings back those nostalgic days of being a kid on Christmas day...I love that feeling...
Christmas Evening Wonderland
Favorite thing: One of my favorite time in NYC is during the year end festive season from Thanksgiving, Christmas to New Year's Eve. The Christmas tree is up and lighted with angels all around. Traditionally, everyone look for the tradition Christmas window decoration of Macy and all the Christmas tidings that you can see in the shops around including Saks Fifth Avenue. It is fun to be amidst the rush to buy Christmas presents but remember your Jewish friends celebrate Hanukah. There are Christmas carols sung live or through piped music. You may have to explain to the kids why there is more than one Santa Claus on the same street. Anyway, do not be a "Scrooge" but drop at least a "Lincoln" for Salvation Army or any charity coin box.
Favorite thing: Skating at Wollman Rink in the winter. Much better than the hopelessly touristy and crowded Rockefeller Center, Wollman Rink offers great vistas of the park and surrounding high rise apartments. Cross 59th Street after skating for 'High Tea' in the Plaza Hotel lobby.
Favorite thing: The Rockefeller Centre is very well known in NYC...we organised to meet a friend there and it was a great meeting place. If you want to see or go to the iceskating at the Rockefeller Centre then you will have to go after the first weekend in October. We missed out by just a few days...
We also missed out on seeing the Christmas tree at the Rockerfeller Centre...maybe next time...

Skating at Rockafeller Plaza
Favorite thing: If you want to add a romantic touch, what a great way than to take a skate around the ice ring at Rockafeller Plaza. Also you can eat in the concourse area next to the ring. They provide the skates and they have instructors that can teach you & help you while you skate.

Thee Christmas tree/ice skating
Favorite thing: Too cold for me to ice skate but didn't mind watching the goofballs having fun freezing their rear ends off!
Fondest memory: The Christmas tree is gorgeous pics don't do it justice! Oh one cool thing is you can get your picture taken for free by NBC in front of the tree then you can look it up on a website they give you and order it only if you want to. You can even order Christmas cards with the tree you, and or, your family. It also saves you from getting yelled at for standing on the walls trying to get a decent pic of the tree! ( I did get pics done by NBC and wow they turned out incredible...sent them to mom as a Christmas gift)

Take some tours NBC, Rokefeller Architecture
Favorite thing: We bought tickets to the NBC studio tours and with it came an architecture tour of Rockefeller Center. It was great, first off, they give you these cool headphones so that you can actually hear your tour guide above all of the city noise. and You actually learn something. It was very cool to learn about the buildings and some of the history behind them. I am not an architecture gal, but I really enjoyed this tour. And you get to see the Rainbow Room on the 65th floor, it has spectacular views!
How to keep the contact with France
Favorite thing: The phone is subject to a surcharge in the hotel. Buy a phone card can be not a cheap solution. And we had never a sufficient number of quarters to call France.
So we used the Carte France Telecom.
We dial a number for USA (there are several), then a code, then our private phone number in France and finally, the number we want to call.
So the cost of the call is on our personal phone bill in France and we do not need to pay any thing in USA.
But it is not the good way to call in USA because the cost of the call would be the same if we phone from Paris.
Fondest memory: The picture wazs taken in the Rockefeller Center, just in front of the Radio City Hall.

Favorite thing: From Fifth to Seventh Avnues and from 49th to 52nd Streets is the area known as Rockefeller Center. The 11 acres contain 19 commercial buildings.
The most famous of the buildings is 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the home of NBC. An NBC Studio Tour is offered here.
The Arcade of Rockfeller Center becomes an ice skating rink in winter. The statue of Prometheus by Paul Manship watches over it. Surrounding the area you will find the flags of all nations.
Fondest memory: Another famous statue in Rockefeller Center is the statue of Atlas by Lee Lowrie and Rene Chambellon. This statue was picketed when it was unveiled due to the imagined resemblance to Benito Mussolini.
The TODAY show is broadcast live from 49th Street and Rockefeller Plaza.
The Rainbow Room is a famous place for dining and dancing.
But the most famous place here is the 6,000 seat Radio City Music Hall which offers tours as well as its shows.

The Rockefeller Center
Favorite thing: The 19-building art-deco complex, stretching from 49th to 52nd Streets and Fifth to Seventh Avenues, features art by 30 different artists in its foyers, gardens and facades. On the lower level, you can find access to the subway and an ever-changing shopping and dining concourse.-There are 35 restaurants in the complex, including the famous Rainbow Room.-
The highlight of the complex is the General Electric Building, formerly the RCA (Radio Corporation of America) Building.-
Fondest memory: Rockefeller Center is busiest during the winter holidays, when crowds flock to see the Christmas Show at Radio City Music Hall and then to skate and admire the Christmas tree in front of the GE building. However, I recommend a visit at other times of the year, too, since there is always plenty to do and see.
In nice weather, the Channel Gardens (so called because they lie in the space between La Maison Francaise and the British Empire Building) are a nice place to relax for a few moments.-
Go to Rockafeller Center,see...
Favorite thing: Go to Rockafeller Center, see the Statue of Liberty, FAO Schwartz (largest toy store), take a cab ride, ride the subway, eat a hot dog from a street vendor (pretzels are good too), shop in the village, go to the good morning amercia show, see a broadway show (you can get tickets at the half price ticket booth the day of the shows), go to central park, there are so many things to do...just have fun
Fondest memory: I have only been to New York in the Winter Time. My family and I would drive from our home in PA to New York every year to see the Rockettes 'Christmas Spectacular' at Radio City Music Hall. What a show! Anyway, we would always go shopping at Macy's...if you don't want to shop you at least have to go see the holiday displays, go to FAO Schwartz, eat dinner somewhere different (MoTown Cafe is cool) and go to Rockafeller center to watch everyone skate (I always wanted to skate but the wait can be up to 3 hours at the holidays! And of course you must go see the Christmas Tree!!!
Rockefeller Plaza with Jeff...
Favorite thing: Rockefeller Plaza with Jeff Koons' Puppy flower sculpture in front. I talked to the man who was watering the huge thing and he didn't sound too excited about it. It was in full bloom in June, on my first trip all alone in 2000.
In addition to having a great time on my own, I met Parker Posey again (see Dublin page for 1st story) by leaving her a letter at the box office of a play she was in called 'Taller Than a Dwarf' (w/ Matthew Broderick). She remembered me from Dublin and was so kind and wonderful again in person. We talked for 20 or so minutes and then she had to leave...I got to hold her arm steady while she rollerbladed out into the screaming crowd. I'll always remember how real she was to Ilana & me. She's just a beautiful soul. Thanks Parker.
