Television Filming, New York City
Law and Order is that unusual modern-day TV show: it’s set in New York, and filmed exclusively in the city, unlike all the sitcoms that are filmed in LA, or the Boston-set shows like Ally McBeal and The Practice that are filmed on the other side of the country, with a few ‘local color’ shots thrown in. As a consequence, New Yorkers love this show and its two spin-offs, since they can spot restaurants, streets and parks they know – sometimes even the buildings where they live. We’ve excitedly shouted out information on the background scenery in the middle of episodes – which makes no impact on the people we’re watching with, of course.
The interiors are shot over in the studios on Chelsea Piers, but you’re unlikely to ever get inside for a peek, so you’re best bet is to see some location shooting, if you’re lucky enough to stumble across the cameras on your wandering. They usually shoot from mid-July to mid-March.
You can attend free tapings of popular TV shows, but you may have to order tickets a long time in advance, or take your chances on stand by.
Some shows you might be able to watch are:
