FLY! If you're coming across country like I am you've got three choices-
John F. Kennedy (JFK)- http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jfkframe.HTM
LaGuardia (LGA)-http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/lgaframe.HTM
Newark (EWR)-http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrframe.HTM
All three will get you there but I prefer JFK. LGA is the more likely option for shorter flights (such as coming up the east coast on a shuttle flight) but it is about the most delay prone airport in the country! EWR is just across the river in New Jersey.
The Port Authority website for each one (links above) is pretty helpful.

Delta Cincinnati to LaGuardia. Takes about 25 minutes from LaGuardia to the theatre district. The going rate for a cab to or from from the LaGuardia from Times Square is about $26.00...it's $35.00 to JFK...at least that's what the sign in the cab said.
Take a cab and bring some good walking shoes!

From JFK: A taxi is the easiest way to Manhattan. It will run you a flat fee of $30 plus tip.If you are tired from a long flight,it is worth it. Or else there is a free shuttle to the Howard Beach subway station for the 'A' train. This only costs $1.50 and is the way to go if it's not late at nite and you have time to spare(the trip is about 1 1/2 total).
From LaGuardia: About $15 into Manhattan. But the M60 bus is a better alternative. For $1.50 (get a transfer from the driver),get off at the Astoria Boulevard subway station and transfer to the Manhattan bound 'N or W' train. After that and you're in Manhattan in 10 minutes.Total trip time is under 1 hour.
From Newark: Ask someone who lives in Jersey !! LOL
The subway runs 24 hours a day.If visiting for more than 3 days, definitely buy a '7 Day Metrocard' for $17. Otherwise,a one-way fare is $1.50.And if you're hanging in New York,it will add up.Just remember that this is the only 4 track subway system in the world.Expresses are on the inside track, and locals are against the wall.A subway map is invaluable, free, and also makes great wrapping paper for holiday or birthday gifts.I do it all the time !!!
If in doubt of directions, don't stare at a map on the wall. That's asking to get mugged. Much better to ask the token booth clerk or a fellow rider. Some people on the train may not look too friendly, but most are and are very willing to give directions. Most likely to get you to stop bothering them. LOL !!!!
If you are visiting with children, get on the first car of the train and look out the front window as the tunnel lights and stations fly by.I did it as a kid, and now do it every day on my way to work. Goes to show.........

To get to New York it's best to go by plane. You don't want to try to navigate the crowded highways unless you have to! Kennedy Airport has a direct connection by subway with the city center. From Newark Airport you can take one of the many shuttle buses to town.
On foot, by bus or by subway, depending on how much in a hurry you are. Make sure you get a ticket that will allow you to travel the public transport vehicles more than once. It's cheaper and more convenient. You can get these tickets at any outlet. Taking a bus that goes up or down one of the avenues is a great way to get some rest after walking and still see some of the city.

We took a flight on Sun Country from Minneapolis to the JFK airport. We were lucky to find a great deal on tickets and fly there in a couple hours, rather than spend a day on a greyhound bus.
Getting from the airport to Manhatten was a tougher step. We took a shuttle service from JFK to our hotel called Airport Shuttle Service. The total cost, $23, included our ride to the hotel, and return service from our hotel and back to the airport. The service was satisfactory, but I would recommend finding a service that doesn't switch buses at Grand Central Station. Another option is to take a taxi. There is a flat rate of $30 from JFK to your first stop in Manhatten.
The cheapest way we got around was walking...which we did plenty of. Our second-most frequent mode of transportation was the subway. We took advantage of the Metrocard deal of $17 for unlimited rides on the subway or bus system for seven days. The card is great as you don't have to carry cash around for buying subway or bus fare which I believe is normally $1.50 a ride. The subway system is a great way to get around and is fairly easy to familiarize yourself with (i've never been on one before this trip).
Finally, taxis are bountiful in NYC and we used them twice on our trip. We took them at night when we didn't feel comfortable walking or riding the subway. While they are more expensive, they can be a fast way to get around (depending on the traffic situation) and a safe option for night travel.

Coming from Europe we travelled by plane.
Subways and many buses run twenty-four hours a day. Tokens are required. Buses accept only exact change or subway tokens. Bus coin boxes will not accept pennies, half dollars or paper money.
Taxis: Yellow Cabs can be found all over the streets of NYC, 24 hours a day. One fare covers all passengers.

I have used Newark, JFK and Laguardia and have found it much easier after several visits to use Laguardia for access to Manhattan.
