The Bitter End, New York City
The Bitter End claims to be New York City's oldest rock club. I will not dispute the claim as it is a fabulous place to see rock bands of the highest quality. Numerous notable celebrities have played and began their careers here. The Bitter End's website claims such notables as Taj Mahal, Woody Allen, James Taylor and Etta James. I saw a clip on "60 Minutes" of a young woman named Stefani Germanotta playing here. She is now known as Lady Gaga. That certainly a wide variety of talent. The talent that plays here is pretty mainstream but still very good in quality.
There is usually a cover charge of $5.00 to $10.00 to get in.

I went to Bleeker Street on that rainy Monday night and just popped into one of the numerous music clubs, The Bitter End. The security guard asked me which band I want to hear and I said that I have no clue and just wanted to get surprised. It's just pure fun to get a load of music surprise in such a place. Don't expect major shows and perfect sound but down to earth musicians which have to fix their technical problems themselves. Rock, blues, jazzy, you name it. It's cheap and funny too.
Live music is great! We happened to be there on a singer-songwriter evening and enjoyed it very much. Nothing beats those live performances. Both being in a band ourselves, we appreciate others making music.

Everybody and their mother from early 60s Bob Dylan to todays newest NY bands plays or has played here at one time. What's great about the Bitter End is it's one of the few remaining venues in Greenwich / Bleecker St area that hasn't really changed much in 40 years.
And it's still about the music, they don't rest on history / laurels like some dinosaur clubs. Still showcasing the best of the up&coming NY rock & songwriting talent. Lots of variety, on one night between 7:30 and closing you might see a set each from 5 or 6 different acts to keep it interesting.
The Bitter End is still the real deal & worth the money.
Dress Code: casual casual. Lots of comfortable clothes & jeans.
We were told that to see some live music you should head Downtown towards Bleeker Street. There are several places down there that offer great live music but we were able to experience only one of them - The Bitter End. So glad that we did! We arrived a little late, so only saw the final band playing but they were fantastic. The drinks aren't too badly priced either. I think they manage to sqeeze in 3 or 4 bands per night which is impressive. The place closes just before midnight. Highly recommended.
The Bitter End has been around since the days of Dylan and Joni, and everyone has played here from legends, to has beens to wannabees.
Dress Code: Casual- it's a music club! Check the local listings, Village Voice or www.acousticlive.com to see who's playing.
Bitter End: Bob Dylan and many other famous musicians have played in this club that still attracts some of the best.
