Bar Piti: Local Favorite for Italian
The atmosphere, staff and especially the food make this Soho spot very popular all year, especially in the spring, summer and fall when you can sit or by the huge open windows. Everything is fresh, fast, authentic and amazing. The tables are close together and the place hums with conversation - chances are you will become friends with the folks at your neighboring tables. It's a must for us every time we visit NYC. Bring cash - no checks or credit cards.

Bar Pitti: Alfresco Italian in Greenwich Village
With tables spilling onto the 6th Avenue sidewalk next to the passing parade of New Yorkers and visitors, Bar Pitti is a long-standing New York favorite. There are some inside tables as well, but these are often half empty while many wait for an outside table. No reservations, no liquor license - only a limited beer and wine menu with only 2 wine choices by the glass, and NO CREDIT CARDS. After wandering around the Village, this is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner but the waiting line grows longer and longer as the day passes and the restaurant is open till as late as 2 AM. A fixed menu includes antipasti, salads, pastas, and panninis as well as a few entrees. Specials are listed on a blackboard brought to the table by the server. Our selection of pastas and appetizers was very good and quite reasonably priced with salads and antipasto less than $10 and most pastas less than $14. Bottled beers are $5 and wine by the glass $7. The entrees are more expensive of course and not what one eats here for. Service was what one would expect with outdoor tables but did not detract from an enjoyable outing. Do note - wines by the bottle are quite expensive and bottled water is an absolute ripoff at $7. If the line is really long, do not make the mistake of going next door to da Silvano which looks the same but is an upscale expensive and (according to a couple we know who ate there) not particularly good restaurant. There are many more Italian eateries in the village that are a better value.
Favorite Dish: Pappardelle in a light pink cream sauce with smoked bacon turned out to be far better than it sounded. Rigatoni with sausage was terrific. For dessert, walk up Bleecker Street toward 7th Avenue to the tiny Bruno Pasticceria, a tiny bakery where a renowned baker makes superb delicacies, offers excellent gelato and sorbetti, and serves surprisingly good coffee at extremely reasonable prices.
