Cafe Lalo: A Pleasant European Cafe in Manhattan

Cafe Lalo is beyond compare on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. The menu is European influenced as are the surroundings. Exposed brick, soft lighting (not dim!), large french windows opened in late spring to early fall; all add to the ambiance.

Crowded times are during brunch/lunch, then in the evenings for dessert. Your best chance is to be an early riser and get in for your morning wake up call with a copy of the New York Times before 9-10am. Spread out at an empty table, read your paper, have a friend meet up with you in time for brunch, and your set.

While during peak hours, the place is packed and you can be left with a lengthy wait for a table, politely pushed out when you are done eating, it's worth the wait. During nice weather, there are benches outside to occupy during your wait for a seat and with the large french windows thrown open it feels like an extension of the cafe.

The staff overall is friendly and cooperative and take time to get to know repeat patrons on a personal level.

Whether it's just you and your morning paper, the cap to a romantic evening out, or just a stop by to catch up with friends, Cafe Lalo is the perfect place.

Favorite Dish: The menu is varied and extensive. Pies, cakes, cheesecakes, pastries of every sort are available and delectable. There is a decent selection of standard Twinnings tea bags and also loose-leaf teas. The coffee used is mellow in flavor and the baristas well-schooled. The highlight of their menu is a selection of waffles for breakfast fixed just about anyway imaginable. Also for those seeking brunch is a collection of European style meals ranging from yogurt, granola, and fresh fruit, to eggs and salad.

We have almost too much food for our table!

Here's one more look at the interior of the restaurant on a lovely spring morning. The walls are covered in French art/theatre posters. We had the same server both mornings, and she was excellent.

Please note, Cafe Lalo does not accept credit cards, so bring cash!

Café Lalo: Best breakfast on the Upper West Side!

Steamed eggs, potatoes, and salad, oatmeal at rear

I'm sure the "Best Breakfast" award would be a tough title to claim on New York's Upper West Side, but Cafe Lalo must be near the top. The menu is extensive, but focuses on steamed eggs with various fillings, oatmeals, pastries, and yogurts. However, it's a brunch menu, so you can also get sandwiches in the late morning, so you're bound to find something you'll like here.

Favorite Dish: The Irish Breakfast--oatmeal with honey and whole cream, served with a scone and preserves, is fantastic! So are the steamed eggs, which are like omlettes filled with ingredients such as feta cheese, wild mushrooms, spinach, peppers, and spices (many options). The scones themselves are marvelous--served with Devon cream and the best I've had since England!

Café Lalo: Just like being in a movie!

In front of Cafe Lalo, Upper West Side

This charming cafe obviously had a loyal following before it was immortalized in the movie "You've Got Mail," starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Being a fan of the movie, I was eager to visit the cafe where the two characters met. But I was even more impressed than I had expected. Besides being a beautiful storefront with floor-to-ceiling windows that are swung open to the breeze, the food here is fantastic. I had breakfast twice here on a five-day trip, and I only regret that I didn't get a chance to come back of an evening for a stab at their monstrous dessert display!

Café Lalo: You've got cake

Apparently this place appears in You've Got Mail but that is just an unnecessary distraction from the real reason to come here... the cakes

It's brightly lit, hectic, and you might have to wait. But it's open late and the choice of cakes is fantastic. Not too expensive either.

Favorite Dish: The strawberry banana cake was really good. But you have to say banana the American way because if you say "banarna" uk style they don't get it :-)

This is the most beautiful European style cafe. If you have ever seen the film "You've Got Mail". you'll recognise it all lit up, but the menu is very good and it's well worth a visit, even if only for a coffee. it gets very busy on an evening, and noisy, but we went at breakfast time one day, and it was much quieter.

Favorite Dish: The pastries are gorgeous!

Café Lalo: Overpriced
jujub profile photo
jujub 435 reviews

I personally thought it was overpriced ($6.50 for a piece of cake?) and the dessert was ok... They do have lots and lots of varieties, but I had better dessert at less hyped places. Went there around midnight on a weekday, had to yell across the table to carry a conversation due to the loud music. During the weekends and at peak hours, you might encounter a wait list to be seated.

In case you are wondering what this place looks like, it is the cafe featured in the movie "You Got Mail," with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (the cafe they were supposed to meet in real life).

Cafe Lalo: Scrumptious desserts and coffee drinks!

A super cute place in the Upper West side that serves up amazing desserts and coffee drinks! A cute little cafe that also serves everything from homemade soups to salads and sandwiches. A cozy ambience to top it off and you feel like you're in a French cafe!

Favorite Dish: Try one of their many coffee drinks like the Jamaican or have some coffee w/ some Bailey's as you dig into one of their chocolate cake desserts topped with fresh raspberries. Yummmmy! They have everything from cheesecakes (in various flavors) to mousse and cakes and creme brulee and pies and the list goes on and on......

Cafe Lalo: Best Dessert Location in New York..

Liz's aunt Maria and I having dessert!

Cafe Lalo's claim to fame was being featured in the Tom Hanks/ Meg Ryan movie, "You've Got Mail." The cozy atmosphere inspired us to find it and check it out. We never actually got there until our friend from Germany came by and encouraged us to go.

We went and it was very different from the movie. It was not the quiet and cozy atmosphere we expected. Instead it was vibrant, cheerful, and crowded! The reason they're so croweded of course is the great desserts and warm drinks they offer. Be sure to visit! You can walk down to it after eating dinner at Tomo.

Favorite Dish: Hmmm... tough choice,

I've had a respberry chocolate truffle cake, the belgian chocolate mousse, and the Chocolate Velvet... all delicious. Elisabeth had the Bailey's Irish Cream Mousse, Apple Cranberry Walnut Pie, and the Hazlenut Mousse with Frangelico.

Everything seems to be delicious. Be sure to try the chocolate shake.. Heaven in a glass!
