It's funny how you read about places, and somehow, without planning it, you just end up there. I had heard about Congee Village on Chowhound.com, and by pure serendipity, ended up there after our day at the nearby Tenement Museum.
The restaurant is very clean, and we were seated in an upstairs dining room, quite amusingly (though that is probably unintentional) decorated as a jungle with faux painted bamboo and tropical silk plants. Service was quick and efficient, though pretty impersonal which is fairly the norm in Chinese restaurants.
Favorite Dish: My friends had never had congee (rice porridge) before, so to not risk them not liking it, we decided to try something "safer" -- Beef Chow Fun, Sesame Chicken, and Buddhist Vegetables, accompanied by steamed rice. They decided to maybe leave the sauteed frog and steamed eel for another day. There were about 20 different kinds of congee listed, and I'm sure they are quite good, judging from the fantastic quality of food we received. The Beef Chow Fun was the best I have ever tasted, ever! Sesame chicken were big chunks of white meat, very lightly breaded, with a sweet tomato-based sesame sauce. The veggies were fresh and even had pieces of black and white fungus in it. Our bill came to an extremely reasonable $30, with leftovers.
Update:We have returned to Congee Village recently and I'm happy to note the food quality 2 years later remains just as good; new recommendations are eel baked with rice; the huge platter of garlic scallion crabs, only $10.00! and the five-spice braised duck
