One of the most famous places to eat something chear, Joe’s Pizza is famous because it was in Spiderman movie but I wouldn’t have written anything if the pizza was bad. We tried some slices and liked it so it’s a good place to eat something if you hang around Greenwich Village and you are hungry after some drinks like we did.
The pizza was crispy (but thin inside(, with a nice sauce and very fresh, something normal with so many customers. We just stood there by the window and watched the people passing by.
Slice:$2.75, Sicilian $3, fresh mozz or any topping $3.5
No sane person goes to NYC and doesn't seek out good pizza.
All of these places: Joes, John's (no slices) & Bleecker Street Pizza were just around the corner from my apartment so I hit them numerous times, always depending on which one I was walking past.
They can sell beer by the bottle from coolers, and a thin crisp slice of NY pizza with beer when you're clubbing Greenwich Village is a slice of heaven.
And for whole pies if you're in Brooklyn by the bridge, check out Grimaldi's
I refuse to join or even consider any debate on the question: 'where is the "best " pizza in NYC?'
All the above places are world-class, just a little different in their own way, but all of them have the unmistakable / undeniable quality and taste you can only get in the NY area.
It's like when some lame sports reporters on different occasions asked the legendary Houston football coach and quote-machine Bum Phillips:
if he thought 'Earl Campbell is in a class by himself?'
Without even blinking, in his Texas drawl he replied:
" He may not be at the head of the class, but whatever class he is in
it doesn't take long to call the roll. "
NY Pizza is unique, and any of the above places will make you happy.
Favorite Dish:
Pizza with a beer. Most all NY slices with a topping or 2 seem to go for around $2 - 2.50 / slice. Cheap good eats.
A hole in the wall in the West Village this is a very popular pizza place. There is no seating other than some scattered tables and stools. The Pizza is fantastic and Fernando’s favorite place to grab a great slice.
I usually go with their plain slice and a fountain soda.
Favorite Dish:
Any of their pizzas is a sure hit.
Joe's is another place I didn't actually eat but I did see it and knew a story so I added it here. Joe's is famous because of its appearance in the Spiderman movie and also for having one of New York's best pizzas.
Ben Affleck On Joe’s Pizza: “Without a doubt this is the best pizza in the entire city,” Affleck says. “It’s so good, in fact, that I don’t even want to ruin the taste of it by putting any toppings on it. I just get a cheese slice and savor it. There are tons of pizza places all over New York. It definitely has the best pizza in the world. But Joe’s is the best of the best.”
Joe's used to be on the corner where the owner paid $800 USD per month for rent. Rent went up a lot in New York since that lease was signed so he offered the landlord $12,000 USD per month. In the end Joe's moved down the block and now there is another pizza place on the corner paying $24,000 USD monthly for the rent!
Joe's is an in-and-out type of joint. There are only a few tables to stand up and eat at. THE PIZZA IS AMAZING, I wish I had some right now. We went here on Halloween after the parade and had pizza with the NYPD. It was kind of bizarre being dressed up in a costume, totally drunk eating pizza with New York's finest. Even if it's not Halloween, you must get a slice from here, it was sooooo good.
Favorite Dish:
Duh!
"lovely" (or rather "beloved") greasy hole in the west village. NO SEATING! just a couple of tables for putting your drink on while you're eating... it's open till very late but I can't remember the exact time... I'll try to find out!
Favorite Dish:
my favourite is the "sicilian". which is (don't faint in horror now!) the thick square ... it reminds me of the pizza you find in italian bakeries (it's a classic school break snack!)
