Unlike the restaurants I reviewed below, Peter Luger has lived a long time and will continue to withstand the test of time for its superb steaks and no-nonsense, no-frills attitude. It's not a swanky place, but a true steakhouse specializing in porterhouse. The waiters are old-school and take pride in what they do. Overall, we enjoyed our P.L. steak experience.

Peter Luger is considered by many to be the best steakhouse in America and for good reason. A meal here is an experience that every steakhouse lover should experience once in their life. While the steaks are the star, every aspect of having a meal here is part of the experience: from the trek over the Williambsburg Bridge from Manhattan, to the unassuming (i.e., pretty crappy) decor and the white jacket clad waiters, to the fact that they only take cash, everything about this place reeks of old school New York City. The steaks are big and delicious, the waiters are surley yet extremely professional, and the cocktails are strong. There's a lot about the place that can intimidate you, the all male service staff, the blue collar Brooklyn decor, the frenetic energy, the goombah-esque maitre d's, the thick Canadian bacon appetizer, pretty much everything... I mean, they don't take cash for chrissakes! But don't be intimidated, its all part of the fun because its the type of place that you can only find in New York City (Brooklyn, to be exact). A Valhalla for steak lovers.
Regarding the service at Peter Luger: the waiters here are generally described as brusk, surly, curt, etc., but don't let their non-warm style make you doubt their professionalism. The last time we ate at Peter Luger, we told our waiter that we wanted to take a plate of food to go for our driver who was waiting across the street to take us to the Yankee game. He said no problem and we expected to have the plate ready with the check, so it would be nice and warm when we delivered it to our driver. As we were about to dive into our steaks, one of our party excitedly pointed outside to the street, where we were delighted to see our waiter carrying a tray of food above his head as he ran across the street, dodging traffic to take a fresh plate to our driver. It was right out of Goodfellas and made the meal that much more enjoyable.
Favorite Dish: Porterhouse for the table.
Try to get an advance booking if you don't want to try their steak on an odd hour. But its well worth the wait if ever.
Favorite Dish: Their signature steak, pork chop is good as well. Be sure to bring home their sauce.

It has been a few years now...but the experience and memories are still fresh.
If you are a foodie than eating a steak when you are in the USA is a must. Peter Luger was my first steakhouseand I chose it because of it's reputation. It is a real new york institution. And it is more than deserved...later visits I tried other steakhouses, but they just couldn't matchup.
The ride to the restaurant was great...in a dark wintry evening crossing the brooklyn bridge. The taxi driver telling us stories about the place being a mob hangout. At that time everything was dark except for the street in front of the restaurant.It was filled with limos and guys standing infront. We were pretty excited, we felt like it was going to be more than just a dinner. Enhancing the story of the cabdriver were two smartly dressed couples who were just leaving the restaurant. They were saying goodbye to the waiters and each other in italian!
We were promptly seated and the waiter was brusque almost to the point of rudeness. Everything looked masculine and ruff. All part of the atmosphere. We tried to fit in...but I guess we stood out. Not a touristy place at all.(smart casual(no tie needed) is a must here. Even though it doesn't look it...but this is a pricey restaurant and the clientele reflects it.)
But being brusque doesnt mean we got bad service. After dinner I asked waiter for a taxi to take us back. He told me everything was taken care off.
When we went outside a limo was waiting to take as back to manhattan!!Well this is truly unique for me. It was the perfect ending to a perfect dinner and a start of one of the greatest nightouts of my life.
I am not sure if the limoservice is part of the regular service...but that truly capped one the greatest eating experiences of my life. Great food, great atmosphere.

If you want to splurge and go for a truly once in a lifetime new york experience ..than this is the place to go.
Favorite Dish: Well the menu is kinda sparse. Even for a steakhouse it's rather minimalist. If I remember it right...I didnt even get one. :-)
I dont think they even need anything else...because everything is about there world famous Porterhouse steak. A huge piece of meat. I am a big eater...but IMO one steak should be more than enough to feed 3 or even 4 persons. Not sure if they are allright with this.
The steak is really easy to share because the meat is pre-cut into slices.(For me it was a first to be serve like this..but later on I noticed that in Italy tuscan restaurants also had similar cuts of meat and theys were made and served the same way!!)
They also have 2 or 3 other maincourses.
They also have some sideorders and starters.
IMO dont bother with them...they are rather expensive and not all that good. There is though one exception....the spinach. They make it using some beef jus and it tastes great with the steaks. IF you must accompany it with something....a side order of spinach is enough to share.
Like all steakhouses it's truly expensive..even if the place and ambiance doesn't look like it. But IMO it's one of the best deals in town. If it's OK to share..one steak will feed 3/4 people and the steak in itself is an expensive ingredient.(just check what a prime well aged USDA steak goes for)
New York has some great steak houses, but this is THE one if you believe the Zagat Guide which has awarded Peter Luger’s their “number one steak house” prize for 20 years in a row.
Finding out just how good this place isn’t easy, reservations are a must and have to be made days, if not weeks in advance. They only allow bookings for up to 6 weeks in the future. So once you have planned your trip to New York get on the phone to book your table. Also, this is not a “fancy restaurant”, people come here for steak, not comfort or subservient service. The décor is reminiscent of a German beer hall and the waiters live up to their “grumpy” reputation.
The menu feature porter house steak for 2, 3 or 4 so you get a fillet and sirloin to sample, but whereas it is often easy to tell the difference, here both sides of the bone are very tender and tasty. I love good steak and on the two occasions I have been to Luger’s I have had to agree that their's is the best – and I have had some great pieces of beef over the years. Other things to note on the menu are the starter of thick cut Canadian bacon and the chips (fries) which are finished in beef dripping. They do serve salmon for “vegetarians” a couple of salad options and some vegetable sides. When the steak is served it is already cut into bite size bits on a hot platter. They have their own steak sauce which is available as a souvenir of your visit, I just wish they would deliver steaks - to London!

The quintessential NY Steakhouse. It's somewhere in between your upper end Chain Steakhouses (Ruth Chris's) and your hoity-toity steakhouses.
The ambience is very old english. With ample wood and carpet for that rustic yet rich feel.
It's a great place for families or groups, definately not the first date sort of place unless both of you happen to be big steak eaters.
Favorite Dish: The Bacon starter is just divine; it's thick, juicy, crispy and filling.
The Entree is restricted to steak for two steak for three and so on and so on. I would recommend this as that's the only way to order porterhouse.
Peter Lugars Steakhouse in Brooklyn is a must stop place if you are looking for a big steak. Make sure to bring cash because they don't accept anything else. Make sure to buy a bottle of sauce to bring home.
Peter Luger's Steakhouse
Set just over the east river in Brooklyn, it's an icon of the city. All the waiters are old German men and the atmosphere is similar to a beer garden in Munich. Just order steak for the number of people at the table, no need for menus. Creamed spinich, potatos, some appetizers and that does it. Bring cash though, and it averages between $40 - $70 per person depending on how much you drink. Enjoy!!!
Favorite Dish: Hands down the best steak in the world. Nobody can touch it.
Peter Luger's Steak house, and Cafe Testerosa
Peter Luger's can run a pretty penny but it's the best steak you will ever have.
Cafe Testerosa is a bit more reasonable and the italian food is wonderful
