Red Bamboo: Vegan and vegetarian paradise

by Edla Updated Aug 6, 2007 45 reviews

A lovely place with an earthy feel to it. Probably because almost everyone in there has looong locks or dreadlocks.

Favorite Dish: I had the Grilled Jerk Chicken.

Now remember I'm NOT vegetarian but surprisingly, the food was really good!!! I was almost convinced that I can do wothout meat :)

Red Bamboo: Food that Comforts the Soul

Red Bamboo specializes in 'fake-meat' meat dishes.

For those of you who lead vegetarian or vegan diets and even for those of you who don't, this place is a great choice in Manhattan. This restaurant specializes in taking vegetable based products and making them look and taste like contemporary meat dishes. These 'pseudo-meats' are prepared with perfection, and it is quite amazing how much they look, feel, and taste like the real thing.

Favorite Dish: The Caribbean Jerk Seitan and the Grilled Bourban 'Chicken' were both excellent!

    Red Bamboo: Vegetarian Soul Food

Red Bamboo is DELICOUS vegetarian (i'm not sure if it's vegan) Soul Food! There is a pretty large menu and everything is vegetarian from the Pork Chops to the Red Snapper. It is a small long and narrow restaraunt with asian decor. small tables and I imagine it could get crowded but I've been there off peak hours and always been fine.

Favorite Dish: Pork Chops with applesauce and Collard Greens with Ham. AND the barbque drumsticks. YUM! I am a carnivore trapped in a vegetarian's mind so I am constantly on the hunt for good 'fake meat'. these pork chops were incredible in texture and flavor. Even my carnivorous friend said they tasted great!

The portions are huge and plenty for lunch the next day.

The coconut cheese cake was a slice of creamy heaven too!

This is a new, wonderful vegetarian/vegan restaurant owned by the same owners of VP2 which is 2 stores down. The food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is serene. Great prices as well, especially their weekend lunch menu offerings at $6.95.

Favorite Dish: Butterfly pork chops. Yes, they're vegetarian and since I never had real dead-animal pork chops, I can't make a comparison but the meal was delicious. Do not miss the desserts, all the cakes are vegan (same baker as desserts from Veg-City Diners) but even if you don't care about eating vegan, the cakes are phenomenal.
