XUNTA is the best tapas bar in New York. I went there on one of our first dates with my husband -Santo, I went there during my bachelorette night as well as just to cure winter depression. The atmosphere is very casual and it depends on with whom you go and who else is there. Sometimes when you got there too early it feels spooky and empty but once it gets crowded the night is yours.
When it gets too crowded and you can't take any more sangria, or the waiter to try some more tapas, it is time you had enough. Just pay your bill and head to DECIBEL (a sake bar 2 blocks away) it will make you feel like being in two different worlds in one day. Incredible change of mood and taste.....I strongly recomend to do it in that order!!!
Favorite Dish: I eat mainly seafood dishes, sometimes I sneak through Santo some scallops wrapped in bacon or some spanish blood sousage. I never had anything bad in Xunta, but I strongly recomend the seafod dishes.
Oh! And SANGRIA!!!! sangria is the killer!!!!! You must hav it, as big as you can get. It is really worth the money and the buzz is just so much different than from anything else you ever drink ( I wonder what they put in there....)
Yes! Definitely! Don't even start without a Sangria.

This place is pretty nice inside. We were, like the reviews i've read, rushed out when they saw we were slowing down. Other than that though it was a good time. Would I come back? Maybe. Depends on the people I would be with. Not for the service though. Too many other places in the city that need to be written about.
I just up'd the satisfaction level for this place 14 November 2005 because we went again Sunday night. MUCH better service.
Go on a slow night like Sunday. The waitress told us they do rush you out on Friday and Saturday.
They are open from 4pm to 11pm daily and to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Favorite Dish: We sampled many an item here. The chourizo a la plancha and also the patacas bravas and champinos osborne were my favorites. Also I must highly recommend the sangria here.

Xunta the Greek. Oh no, that was Zorba. Don't let the name mislead you, it's Tapa's you get served here! It's a good and reasonable priced restaurant. It certainly looks cheap on the outside, and the blue lights are not really inviting, but after a bit of sangria you won't notice.
It's located in the eastside of Manhattan in the all the immigrant area's. Which means good food for reasonable prices, and the service is pretty good as well. Only drinks can be a bit expensive.

I had a great time meeting some VT people at Xunta. It was extremely quiet there on a Sunday night- there were only 2-3 other occupied tables besides ours. April, our waitress, told us Friday and Saturday nights are the most busy- that's when they have to rush people out. Service was friendly, food was good, and the decor was fun (I liked the blue Christmas lights on the ceiling).
Favorite Dish: everything I tried was good (chicken skewers, croquettes, grilled sausage & onions...)

I love Xunta. The sangria is killer, and the food is amazing. Now, I've read that it's mainly food from Galicia, but most of the tapas are what I long for when I dream about being in Granada again. So you make up your own mind!
It's a comfortable, greasy spoon version of a tapas bar. It's a much better deal than Sala (see other tip), and the food is better. Go to Sala for a romantic time, come to Xunta for an unforgettable time. The menu is the only time I'm tempted to start eating seafood again. I've come close!
Favorite Dish: It's not a dish, but...the Sangria! It's so good. It's delicious and potent...be careful! The cheese plate is wonderful, and the tortilla is amazing. Also, the patatas bravas (patacas!) are HOT and wonderful. I've only had better in Madrid.
Enjoy!

Fun place. My suggestion: sit at the bar and order tapas and a pitcher of sangria for you and a friend. The place is boisterous and the music jumping. Can be very crowded on the weekends. Get there early. Surrounding neighborhood, the East Village, is the quirky, bohemian part of town with much to see in terms of entertainment, bars, odd items to purchase and the occasional dude with a 10 inch mohawk.
Favorite Dish: Very tasty menue across the board!
