Saks Fifth Avenue: Saks - had to look!

We are not big shoppers by any means, but felt we had to visit a couple of really famous ones, just to say we had been there, much like visitors visiting Harrods in London.

World renowned and a must-see. The interiors in Saks were as expected, very posh and expensive in taste.

It’s a place where anything that looks like glass, you can be pretty sure is crystal!

We literally spent about ten minutes in there, it was just to have a quick look around. I was also worried one of the expensively dressed, stiletto heeled sales ladies at the makeup counter would grab me and offer to do a makeover! haha

We came to New York with the view to buying a couple of items that are far more expensive in the UK.

Two of these items were Ipod iTouches. We saved about £100 buying them in New York as apposed to the UK. They are our favourite toys, very handy!

We didn’t buy anything else of real value in New York, just the usual knick knacks and mementos. Most of our shopping was window shopping!

The photos are of Saks window displays - there were some really lovely Christmas window displays around.

What to pay: Very expensive! Hence us not buying anything!

5th Floor, I saw one piece of clothes: 140,000 $

A place to visit, but take care of your bank account. All famous brands in clothes and accessories. If you go with your wife, you better pretend you have forgotten your credit card in the hotel.

What to buy: Clothes

What to pay: Too much

Saks at Christmastime

When one walks through the doors of Saks Fifth Avenue they are transported to another time. The store still has all of its original wooden fixtures, and really gives one a sense of the experience that all old-time department stores once gave their customers. Every detail is looked after here. The decor is gorgeous. The staff is friendly and respectful, and makes customers feel that their purchase is the only one that matters. In short, the just being in the store makes you feel good about spending money. It's worth sticking your head in here even if you don't want to buy anything.

What to buy: Saks only sells high-end and designer goods, but you knew that already. It's a good place to shop for cosmetics and perfumes and well as clothing and accessories such as shoes and bags.

Saks Fifth Avenue: Elegance at its Best

Saks Main Floor

One of the most famous retailers in the world, this elegant department store has been dressing the well-heeled since 1902.

Opened by Andrew Saks, the original store was located in Herald Square (where Macy's resides). After merging that store with Gimbel's, Saks opened this Fifth Avenue store catering to the wealthy in 1924.

There's no such thing as self-service here, as sales people are trained to please, and customer satisfaction is paramount. Therefore, it is not the best place to go if you just want to browse and get uncomfortable with overattentive sales people.

What to buy: Saks has great women's apparel from such designers as Gucci, Calvin Klein, Ferragamo, Chanel and Prada; and men's from the likes of Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, and Dolce & Gabbana. Saks' Salon Z caters to full-figured women in search of designer looks, while SFA, the house brand, offers sleek fashions at more affordable prices. They also are known for having a wonderful petite department.

Check out the sales for some good bargains.

What to pay: Get your checkbook/credit cards out. Things are expensive but of great quality here.

Main floor Saks Fifth Avenue

One of the most famous retailers in the world; Saks Fifth Avenue.! It's easy to find – next to St. Patrick's Cathedral, just look for the flags! The spacious environment of Saks Fifth Avenue make shopping here a pleasure. Even during the busy holiday season, you won't feel bustled around.

The main floor of Saks Fifth Avenue bustles with activity from the parade of counters featuring accessories..Designers have their own sections to display their latest fashions. Women's collections are featured on floors 2,3 and 4 and active/casual wear on 5. On floors 1, 2 and 6 of Saks Fifth Avenue, you'll find The Men's Store. Up on 8, you'll find great clothing for kids.

We’ve been in New York in December 2004, the store was decorated with snowflakes and the holiday window featured scenes from the book SantaKid by James Patterson. They also had a Snowflake Spectacle. This is one of the largest Holiday Light Displays in the world. Philips Electronics & Saks Fifth Avenue Unveil Their Snowflake Spectacle every half hour.

What to buy: Beautiful handbags, fur scarves, designers handbags, shoes, clothes and a whole lot more!

Saks Fifth Avenue: WINDOW SHOPPING
thinking profile photo

2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

thinking 622 reviews

Notice the windows, the flower arrangements, the high priced merchandise.

What to buy: Lunch is alright here.

What to pay: If you have a USA address & CREDIT CARD, they will open an account for you and give you 10% off the merchandise only during the day they give you the account. However, if you are trying to get rid of your dollars before returning to Europe, they will not allow you to pay your credit card bill in cash if it is more than $350.00!
You decide if it is worth having a credit card.

Saks 5th Avenue

If you're looking for some of New Yorks highest priced fashion and accessories then you should visit Saks 5th Avenue. I warn you though, it's pricey. If you have the money, have fun.

What to buy: Their wedding dresses are quite nice. They customize them for the very imporant brides.

What to pay: Over a thousand for a pair of shoes is not rare!
